because we don't exist in a vacuum. it is damaging to tell little girls that they should focus on being pretty and girly and their toys should center around cooking or doing their hair. these are the messages that are marketed to both girls and women 24/7 already, why do their toys need to shape who they are going to be? when toys are marketed towards little boys to be a superhero, they are really being told to have an imagination, to make up story lines, to save the world, etc. when we give small girls toys that only relate to being 'girly' we are effectively telling them who they should be instead of letting them find out who they want to be.

your children play with disney princess toys and barbies because you let those into your household. you are the parent, and you can make the decision about what sort of stereotypes are healthy or not for your children. this whole 'well my daughter just likes pink and makeup and is girly and there's nothing i can do about it!' is so naive and stupid.

these new legos are awful.

making your own broth is about the easiest thing there is. save your cooking scraps for a couple of days instead of composting them (i put them in a plastic bag in the freezer) and then boil the hell out of everything. i usually have a box of imagine low sodium veggie broth on hand 'just in case' but it never actually gets used.

make ahead breakfast burritos

scrambled eggs/garlic/onions/spinach, maybe some black beans, maybe some soyrizo, maybe some roasted potatoes, maybe some cheese. steam or microwave a tortilla for 10 seconds so it's easy to wrap them and then stick em in foil and into the freezer. put it in the fridge before you go to bed at night and then wrap it in a paper towel and microwave for 45 seconds. add copious amounts of tapatio. easiest and most filling breakfast that i've figured out to throw in my bag on the way to work.

really? i haven't paid for internet in 6 years thanks to various neighbors that are dumb (or nice) enough to have unsecured networks. we have everything encrypted and hidden on our computers and i'm not incredibly worried about someone seeing my netflix queue. sorry boutcha folks but i'm just not ever going to feel bad about keeping my dollars away from comcast or att.

the most important advice for a tenant is to know the tenants rights of the city/county/whatever you live in. landlords are usually the ones with all the power, and the small amount of rights that belong to the renter can make all the difference in the world. we currently have a TERRIBLE property management company that won't do a damn thing until you have to get to the point of threatening to sue them (we're talking serious issues, like chipping lead paint in an apartment with a toddler, refusal to fix heaters, etc.). i've had better landlords in the past but let's face it, these aren't your friends, these are people who are invested in making as much money off of you as possible.

we don't give our daughter extremely pink stuff or ANYTHING disney princess related. there is a firm line drawn there (we have received disney princess stuff as gifts/hand me downs and have promptly donated it to charity). anything else is pretty open, she has baby dolls and a play food set but most of the time plays with her cars and blocks and tromps around the house being a dinosaur. her best little boy friend has a play kitchen, lots of baby dolls and baby strollers, etc. but our daughter is most interested in his brio set.

just stand back and let the kids play but don't give them the crap that will affect them for life. check out this peggy orenstein book if you're interested

they are meant to hold pet food without pets being able to get into them, but a smaller one would probably work for compost as well

Huge Chocolate Chip Cookie Baked in a Cast-Iron Skillet
Recipe Review

we made it last night with our cast iron pan we use for everything and it just tastes like....cookie.

it's a pretty well seasoned pan that we take care of. we don't cook meat in it but we do cook fish. it turned out fine. can't wait to make oatmeal cookies like this!

hi thanks for all the advice!

here is a quick layout diagram i made:

another big problem with the awkwardness is that every time i think, oh i can just move the fridge to the right, there is a door that opens right to it's right! same with moving the stove any farther to the left; the landlord has converted a built in ironing board into a spice rack. handy, but it's so tall that you can't even put the smallest table underneath it.
