Under cabinet lighting. Seriously, it makes HUGE HUGE difference. You can get cheap stuff from Ikea that's LED so you just leave it on 24/7. It pretty much eliminates that old and dimly lit feel from even the grungiest of kitchens (trust me, I know from grungy kitchens!)

For one thing, you are going to need a really really good contractor and a really good architect. Talk to Jim Estes in Newport and Oldport homes. We use them for every project we do and they're just excellent. But it's going to be insanely expensive.

Ive always been surprised at laundromats dont go for combined washer dryer units like this. It would be so efficient for them. Hmm.

NOOOOO Dont paint them! If you want a brighter and more modern look then a) get a high intensity light, like an LED bar, under the stove hood. Those tiles look like they have some pretty intense hues in them and a bright light will pick them up. Then paint the WALLS and maybe the CEILING but DONT PAINT THOSE GORGEOUS CABINETS! I would recommend a screaming primary blue, like Behr Cosmic Blue. Something like this:

I actually think frosting the glass will look great. But god dont paint those cabinets. I just think you need better, more varied light and a bright color to make it totally modern and beautiful

Heh, I had a friend who used to smoke a lot of weed and as everyone knows weed gives you the munchies. Her particular kink was that she would get really hungry and attempt insanely complex recipes while totally stoned. One time I came downstairs in the morning and from what we could deduce we think she tried to make eclaires from scratch and roast a chicken. There was this burned carcass in the sink, covered in runny chocolate ganache and the cats had been eating it all night. One of them had gotten a drumstick off and had dragged it over to her favorite perch on the (brand new) couch, where she had messily enjoyed it. There is still a chocolate/grease stain on the upholstery.

Heres what Id do:
Paint any available wall space, including the space between the counters and the cabinets, a bright warm based yellow tone. Im thinking the color of primroses or buttercups. NOT cream, it needs to actually scan as yellow. Something like Behr 330b-6 Lemon Sorbet. (Bad name, that sounds like it would be a cold yellow, but its actually quite warm)

However it kind of looks like you have a tiled backsplash, so obviously you wont be able to paint it. So instead I would get sheets of nice heavy glass cut to the perfect size and then back them with the color. There are a couple of tutorials on this site showing how to make glass backsplashes.

And then I would accent the space with BRIGHT red accessories. Like fire engine, cherry, apple red. A bright red teapot to live on the stovetop, bright red towels and dishcloths hung on the outside of the cabinets, a bright red vase or red cannisters, anything. There also seems to be a rather nice wall space next to the fridge- I would hang some red themed art there. A graphic style print of an apple, or maybe that Andy Warhol picure of the Campbells soup cans. That would be kind of funky and cool. Or get a nice piece of something cut in the shape of the Mac Apple and paint it bright red, that is, if your Mac ppl.
