I was fortunate enough to pick up a huge bottle of Cointreau when coming back from my overseas trip in the duty free store. It takes its place next to my bottle of rum (dark and light), cooking sherry, tawny port and the vodka & jager in the freezer. Yum!

I always use disposable gloves in the kitchen because of skin irritations. So if this happens, I just carefully slip off the 'meaty hands', and voila, clean hands!!

Claire here - the pot was bought from a discount variety store here in Australia. And I don't think they would replace the pot. I think my problem may have stemmed from the fact that I put the pot into my Big Green Egg when making a no knead bread. The intense heat might have weakened the already cheap and nasty enamel.

Just yesterday I received a flyer in the mail for a scrap metal company that buys cast iron. So I'll try my luck there, and use the couple of dollars I'll get for it to go towards the purchase of a Le Crueset!!

Thank you all for the lovely suggestions and advice. I don't think I'll be using cast iron for my rice cooking in the future!

This post just reminds me of an old simpsons episode when Mr Burns is at a supermarket and can't decide between the ketchup or the catsup ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biW2i9yK-10

Oh, yeah - let me put in another vote for 'Tomato Sauce'!

I have a set of these covers, and I find them very useful for when I cut a cake in two!
After I cut the cake, I simply slide the cover in between the top and bottom to separate the cake with ease. Then I just slide the cake back on top when I finish frosting the middle. It works like a charm!

Does anyone else have alternative uses for the covers?

I worked in a head office for a company that was located in a old house on a main road. The kitchen bench tops were horrid, so to fix it the boss got a piece of sheet metal (stainless steel perhaps - very thin probably 1-2mm) and just placed it on top - cut to fit and VOILA! Instant make-over!! It looked great, and worked great. No need for adhesives. . .

@mattiemay - you can get vegan puff pastry!! I have some in my freezer at home right now. Its just as good as the regular ol' stuff.
I'm in Australia - so I don't know where you'd be able to find some. . .

I received: a 1970's Kenwood Chef Aid, white with blue trim from my mother who's an avid op-shopper! Still works great (albeit a little noisy!!) and;
I gave: a vintage whistling stove top kettle to my brother and future sister inlaw. Red. Awesome!

Last year, I made a tree out of chicken wire. Just molded the wire into a cone shape. For the decorations I used metal washers and wire for some of the outside decorations. And the best part about having a chicken wire cone shaped tree is that I got to decorate the inside. For that, I used some left over wrapping (pink tissue paper and corrugated cardboard) and with that I made some star shapes and hung them up inside.
It looked absolutely divine.

My husband and I have our spaetzle as a side dish when we make corned beef. We mix a bit of sauerkraut into the spaetzle, toss it all together in a pan and sprinkle a bit of freshly toasted breadcrumbs. It works so very well with the corned beef, especially doused in white sauce. Yum.

This is the recipe I use for spaetzle and sauerkraut:

I have a recipe from Australia - its Polenta and rosemary bread with fresh sweet corn! Its from a TV show call The Cook and The Chef. I made this not long ago, and found that it was best eated when toasted. Just chuck a bit of butter in a pan and throw the bread in, delicious!!

Its a small trick, but try wrapping your celery in tin foil! I've had a whole bunch of celery stay crisp and green in my fridge for up to 2 weeks!! It doesn't go limp or anything. I'm going to start trying it with other veggies. No reason to waste money on a gimmicky "green bag" when foil is so damn cheap!
