That trap is cute, but looks more novelty than anything :)

I have had great success with a no-kill trap called the Tomcat...a little peanut butter and voila! Fresh mouse in the morning. We then took the mouse across the river to the woods and he hasn't been seen around since! I wrote about it here, in case anyone's interested in the deets: http://folksyhome.com/2012/04/04/of-mice-and-men/

I've done the vinegar, dish washing soap and salt mix sprayed on the leaves and it worked! The plant did come back the next year, but we sprayed again and it went buh-bye.

Upside down golf clubs! There are always old golf clubs at yard sales and turning them upside down and tying them together makes a perfect 3-legged teepee. I used mine for beans last year and it worked great! Good luck!

Absolutely put the plastic film on the windows...we live in PA in a house built in 1914, and I swear the windows are original to the house: single pane, double hung...the draftiest! We cover all of them with the film and it makes a HUGE difference. We also bought one space heater (around $40) that has wheels, and wheel it to whichever room we are in. Our place is about double yours, and we haven't had to put the central heat on yet. We really only put it on when company comes over! We also think that 59 is the tipping point temp for putting on the heat, but that's a different story. Good luck winterizing, it really does save a lot of $$!

I have a very similar couch! We found it as a great deal on craigslist and decorated the living room around it. We have a kilim with reds, yellows, blues and naturals (I know, sounds very Santa Fe, but it's not) and we painted the walls dark navy blue. Wood accents with both sharp and worn edges, and painter's cloth drapes make it look inviting but not overly masculine. Have fun with it, I say! The color really does go with most things, and I have to highly suggest the dark walls (if that's an option for you) because the couch pops against them. Good luck!

I don't know where you are, but I found old coffee sacks for $0.50 each at Building 19. They are a chain of bargain stores a la Big Lots. They had a great selection, so good luck!

Seedling containers! Poke a few holes in the bottoms and fill with potting mix and a seed. They are a great size for seedlings before they get transferred to the outside garden.

This home is just great. The lived-in feel is refreshing, yet your taste has kept it from seeming messy. I have the same leather couch and the same dark living room color haha. My favorite house tour by far.

Of course we have placeholder furniture! And we totally have the exact same placeholder nightstands. Guilty. But sometimes you just can't rush decorating and the perfect piece(s) don't all cross your path exactly when you start looking. Patience is a virtue when trying to decorate to your own taste!
