I agree with the start small concept... one thing at a time. Here's where I'd start:

new cabinet hardware
add a pendant light (and in-ceiling spots if you can)
remove the cabinet above the sink and add a more interesting curtain

Then, depending on your storage situation, I'd consider removing the doors of the very highest cabinets and either putting in glass doors or painting the interior as recommended already.

Love your house! And all the circle art.

Did you remodel the kitchen or just paint? I'm looking at a similar color combo: light wood yellow-orange floors (already there), with stainless appliances, similar cabinets and countertops. If you did the cabinets, I'd love to know your source. I'm looking at Ikea's line and wondering if you chose the same (which facade?).

I have a dilemma: I live in a 1962 ranch house with wide, high windows. I would like to put roman shades (or balloon shades) on the two windows in my daughter's room but I can't find premade shades to fit this dated window size and I am having trouble making shades that mount properly. I started with balloon shades but couldn't attach the black-out fabric behind the fabric without weird bunching, so I switched to simple roman shades. Now I can't figure out how to mount the board above the window (exterior mount to maximize light when the shade is up) so that light doesn't stream in the sides (because the curtain ends up 1 -2" away from the wall). Help?

Can you buy some moulding from a hardware store and cut to size, making a 3-4 inch deep frame then staple a window screen to it? You could paint the moulding first, and perhaps mount it so that the deeper side is between the screen and wall. Fabric might be prettier, but would deflect more and provide more of a barrier to the heat flow.

I agree with the shelf-above idea for diapers and wipes. As for the other necessities, I hang a vintage fabric shoe organizer (my dad's) off the end of the (Ikea Hermes) dresser... the top row of pockets holds the baby's brush, nail scissors, lotion, etc. and the lower pockets hold her "treasures". This arrangement should work until she's tall enough to reach the top row of pockets. Now that I think about it, you could easily put 3-4 diapers and a small wipe container in the top pockets, but you'd go crazy restocking them all the time.

My husband builds bikes for fun and often buys vintage frames and has them powder-coated (just look it up in the phone book or start calling bike shops, they should be able to point you to a small-scale powder coating shop). He can tape off lugs and other features like that, but usually searches for replacement decals if they will be covered by the paint. Good luck!

Love these! One questions: in step 8 you say "apply another layer." A layer of glue or of mod podge?

Beautiful!
Where, oh where did you find the curtain track for the top bunk bed? I've been searching for sources on one of those.

I am SO DOING THIS! I have been looking for just the right small section of wallpaper for an accent wall at home but unwilling to spend $180/roll. I'll just make it myself (next time my husband goes on a work trip)!

I love the idea of having an activity to do rather than play games or try to make silly conversation with people I'll likely never see again. I once went to a shower where there were scrapbooking supplies laid out on tables and we chose an "event" (first tooth, first vacation, friends, first birthday, etc.)to make a page so the busy mom could fill it in later. Everyone had a blast and it gave us all something to talk about that wasn't personal or invasive for lots of strangers.

We're doing the same, or at least trying to. Fortunately a close friend whose family is complete with the youngest at 2 yrs has given us just about everything we need (the fact that she's moving with the family to South America and was "cleaning out" helped, too). We have: crib, changing table, bouncy chair, swing, Boppy Pillow, bassinet, jogging stroller, car seat, stroller, play gym, maternity AND baby clothes from the friend as well as the dresser from Craig's list and the glider from a garage sale. I guess being an older mom has its benefits too! I will try the "Battery Free until I'm Three" motto with the grandparents.
