all depends on where you are. My plain old copper wired land line worked through hurricane Katrina. nary a cell phone with service. It doesn't make sense for everyone, but for some of us it does. I also like the clarity of sound and comfort of a big old thing I can balance on my shoulder.

We live in New Orleans on the Uptown Parade route so we are going to have our party the following weekend to coincide with our annual Mardi Gras Bacchus Parade party. It's a sort of a rollicking open house that pretty much runs all day and into the night. Friends, neighbors, family and everyone's friends who are along for the ride. (Parade Posse) will attend. I feel so much better organized and that finally the house we present will be comfortable, welcoming and closer to the vision of how we want to live.
Menu:
my Husband's beloved Red Beans & rice (both pork heavy and veggie versions)
crock pot veggie curry
mini muffalatas (from the Rouses grocery)
velveeta & rotel (cheese crack)
hot spinach artichoke dip
Chips crackers cheese and assorted snacky stuff

Bloody marys, beer and wine
King cake

Pepto!

As someone who has been on both sides of this equation, remember that most people rent residential property as it is presented to them. "As is" If the owner of the property could afford to make up grades they probably would have done so before marketing it.

On the other hand if you can prove a level of competence and quality sometimes property owners will happily allow you to make upgrades such as painting or recovering a floor etc. if you do the labor and subtract the cost of materials from the rent.

The main problem is you are already renting the place, so there is no immediate ecconomic incentive to make the changes you desire.

Hey funstraw- Please, don't advise people to "paint anyway" even though their agreement with their landlord forbids it. That's no way to treat people by violating agreements and trust. It's not cool. The comforter is lovely and I agree that using crisp whites in accent pieces would be very attractive.

It's not an Oyster knife.

I vote for veneer tool.

-Or a faux-graining tool -you rake it through the paint to create "grain".

A mask ball, very happily, is not a thing of the past in New Orleans! (…and Venice and I imagine many other cities that have carnival traditions.)
It is an important (and fun!) part of our living, cultural traditions.
