Unexpected Container Gardening: Flax

I managed to snatch up two for $80; one is 81" and the other is about a foot shorter. Funny enough they are oddly comfortable, white and with simple lines. I went to great lengths to be able to get them in our less-than-900-sq-ft apartment, including asking the next door neighbor to open her door so we could get that extra foot we needed to get them in! The longest of the two ended up on the balcony facing the woods, the other is working as our headboard/bookcase. I love them!

Love the natural light, love that your furniture is lifted away from the ground, giving that light and airy feel. It feels like with colors you didn't go with a 'scheme' necessarily, but it all comes together well. One of my favorites!

Since I love this look but only have a balcony, I'm thinking a shallow wooden box with a low lip, a design of smaller rocks and sand (maybe grout?) might be the next best thing!

It's nice, but I was expecting something with more....oomph.

I read somewhere that the standard used to be blue for girls and pink for boys - something about red being a masculine color and pink being a gentler, calmer color for baby boys.

Here's an article I turned up: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/When-Did-Girls-Start-Wearing-Pink.html

I know this is my sick twisted mind, but before I read the description of the lobster-shaped molds I could have sworn they were....um....anatomically-shaped. If you squint your eyes...

Not too unusual, just oddly shaped. That last one would get knocked over in a minute by my 3 year old. Heck, I'd probably join him in playing Book Catapult.

Drawworm, there's clearer directions on the site. The original was actually turned counterclockwise, not 'flipped' front to back (the wording confused me too). Then it was scanned and printed onto white cardstock.

@Rainarana: We had the same issue, then decided it wasn't working having only a desktop. We use a CPU and wi-fi, which we hide under the bed, and use our laptops to work off the wi-fi. That way we can use any flat surface (dining room table, coffee table, our laps, etc) for work and tuck it away after we're done. Office supplies are also hidden but easily accessible. Our only challenge for the moment is hiding our printer/copier/scanner combo, it's a little on the bulky side.

I agree with all of it, but I think the whining about the DIY is because most DIY 'looks' like it was DIY. If you can make a comparable knock-off of an original that you can't afford, then by all means do it. But don't come at me with a concoction of yarn, glitter and ModPodge and ask me if it looks like a designer piece. The answer will always be no.

The matte medium sounds like a great low-cost idea. Has anyone ever tried adding a small amount of acrylic paint to 'tint' a window? Since it would be a small amount I imagine it would come off, but there's always the possibility of staining the window, so to speak.

I second the disappointed comments...IMHO there's little to inspire in this space (certainly no offense meant to the dwellers) and isn't that why we read AT in the first place?

Maybe flip it on it's side on a shelf, cabinet or pantry that is deep enough and store thin baking sheets/similar items on...

But chances are at some point someone's going to look at it cockeyed and say 'Is that a dishwasher tray??'

I almost had my hands on a 12' old wood ladder on Craigslist but someone beat me to it. I had plans to hang fabric between every other rung for toys and books, then lean it against the wall.

This concept has been practiced in Montessori classrooms for years, but it isn't for every kid. When we move next week my 3.5 year old will have his own cupboard, but he's very independent and practical. Though I'll have to decide an alternative snack solution than the picture above.

These colors are terrible, but if you've ever been to the windy beach and you just can't get warm under that too-small beach blanket...this doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Still can't bring myself to buy anything with the word 'Snuggie' on it though.
