When our daughter was born we put a change table is in the main part of our (2 story) house. Aside from having a dog-free zone to change her, it gave us a place to store baby stuff (burp cloths, baby carrier, bibs, etc.). We keep the bulk of her things in her small nursery, but having essentials in the main area has saved a lot of trips up and down the stairs. She is a year old now and we still use the change table for changing and for storage. Having a dedicated baby area has kept our daughter's supplies from taking over our living room.
