Yes to the big glass of water and two pain relievers before bed. It's magical. Kombucha and a carb-y, protein-filled breakfast? Can I have that right now?

-I always take a big ziplock bag of homemade granola with me. Once I get to the hotel, I go to a nearby grocery store and buy several days worth of individual yogurt cups, which I then refrigerate. You really should talk to the hotel about getting a small fridge in there! That seems so strange to me that they don't have one.
-Bananas and any other fruit that can be left on the counter are great.
-For lunch, tins of boneless/skinless sardines in olive oil (the ones from trader joe's are really good) on Wasa crackers. You could also pick up a bunch of those disposable mustard packs if you like mustard with your sardines. If you have a kettle you could do ramen/noodle cups and then add some fresh ingredients to them. You could also take avocados and little Persian/Lebanese cucumbers and have those on Wasa cracker or as a small salad.

If you liked this you should look up recipes for "zeitoon parvardeh," a northern iranian dip/relish that is a pureed mixture of pomegranate, walnut, olives, garlic, and olive oil.

I love this smoked trout and the sardines from TJ. But I'm curious. Everyone says sardines are cheap but I'm never able to find a can for under $2. Is that what you mean by cheap?

You should try making Fesenjaan. It's a Persian stew (usually made with duck or chicken) that uses a walnut and pomegranate base. You can find a good recipe in New Food of Life (a great Persian cookbook in English).

Another thing, also from the North of Iran, is making a walnut pomegranate paste as a marinade for grilled meat. YUM.

Ugh, I have to say that I really dislike it when I go to someone's house and they have pets yet seem to be oblivious to the fact that not everyone appreciates pets in the kitchen, on the dining room table, and so on. Thanks for this post. I once had a roommate who would let her cat jump up on the kitchen table. It drove me nuts and has forever prejudiced me to animals in the kitchen...
