Wow, what a heated post. My vote goes to the Hello Blocks. By far the best design in the finals. Good Luck.

@ madmaven

I definitely thought the same thing, but if that were true then the last six posted designs would be more likely to be the top six designs, whereas only one of them is in line to move into the finals. Quite a few of the current finalists were early posts, and have held onto their rankings quite well.

In future versions of this competition, and even future rounds of this one, it would probably be better to keep the final vote tallies hidden to avoid any uncouth voting practices.

While the current situation doesn't seem to have generated a particularly noticable amount of voter fraud, the potential to exploit the system is definitely there.

There's a big difference in the wobble glasses and these bowls. The bowls would actually rock, with nothing to stop them from going too far, whereas those glasses have a lip that sets them at a fixed angle, and just spin. They can rock beyond their lip.

I can't imagine a scenario where I would celebrate the possibility/anticipation of being burnt by a boiling bisque, singed by a scorching stew, charred by a calescent consomme, or even parched by a piping pottage.

Cute and clever. Although I think the exposed screws mounting it to the wall could have been easily/better resolved.

Also it looks like the whole thing is put together with screws (see the patched screw holes in the first photo). I would expect some better joinery for 20 hours of labor and $625.

And I would like to see the bottom openings a little wider to accommodate taller art books and the like.

Rendering or not, it's still a lovely design.

I'd like to see it on a larger scale, so you could really get a sense of the flow, curves, and swoops.

2*.

How sweet. I think you've hit a great market segment at a good price. You should sell a ton of these in Santa Fe.

Kudos for the use of reclaimed materials and Bioshield stains, though I'd love to see a photo of it without the gauze.

Three stars.

Too many big dripping splotches. Makes it look like your 5th grader's notebook doodlings are being attacked by a school of mangled jellyfish.

The colors/contrasts are also way too harsh. Maybe a tone on tone, or just a textured, monochrome wallpaper would have been a better way to go.

Eh, looks kinda like another version of the same flat-pack table that every design student has to create at least once in their schooling.

It's cute, but won't hold up to the rigors of daily use. Tabbed plywood joinery will eventually fail and you'll just have to replace the entire table.

Despite the fact that every design student has made one of these, there's a reason Ikea doesn't have a table like this in their line up: It wouldn't meet their incredibly lax, "disposable" standards for durability/function.

@ Darley... I think "last post of this round" just means the public voting round. Once the 6 finalists are picked, I assume there will be another round of posts (which will include 1-minute videos) and the judges voting round.

Is there an actual prototype? Looks like these images are all renderings. Wouldn't the tension on the posts pull the aluminum rods right out of the drywall? You would have to anchor these in studs, and that means wider spans of unsupported rubber which would probably sag... a lot. I think it's a sham. Not to mention, what could a shelf that small possibly accommodate? You would have to buy like 20 of them to actually have useful shelf space, and that would be way, WAY, expensive.

@ garrischristie, what do you mean about unresolved coupling? I like the way they stack. I think the openness of the edge/coupling pieces looks nice, especially in the contrasting woods (like photo 4). The spaces keep them from becoming a solid mass from the side, adding to their light and elegant appeal.
