Ok AT is recycling posts and making me think I'm going crazy..... so disregard the above question about whether or not the wall was rebuilt. I see now that these pictures are from the 2009 and the house tour was from 2011.

Okay so it's really weird that I was looking for something in the archives and just happened to click on the House Tour from a few years ago showing the house that accompanies this patio.
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/julie-and-robs-current-twist-o-159937
and to save you a few clicks here's the picture of the wall itself:

I love it both ways. Did you just rebuild this recently or is this a picture from when it was first built? The house tour pic has blocks with more age. If you rebuilt it, why?
Thanks!

This is probably the "real"est room I have ever seen on AT. I love it. I love that the furniture doesn't all match (but it totally works together). I love the gallery art. I love that couch. I love the lights, the paint, the molding, the floors. I love the little touches like the tea bag in the mug! It's not at all pretentious. I almost feel a little shy looking at all the details because I feel like I'm prying. What a great story to go along with the room! Like the others, I hope you win too!

I filled a container with sand, stuck my little cuttings in, covered with a plastic bag. All you have to do is keep the sand consistently moist and gradually take the plastic bag off after a couple of weeks. I did this with butterfly bush and hydrangea this year. Did it in the past with boxwood. I used softwood cuttings in the spring, and they took all summer to root. I killed them accidentally when I went away on vacation and forgot about them for a week. That was a HUGE disappointment.I think that unless you want a perfectly identical hedgerow to match something you already have, it's much easier to buy boxwood. They're not so expensive or rare that it's worth the effort to propogate. And they will take FOREVER to get to a respectable size. Save the space for your favorite coleuses and geraniums.

Tree topping. I'd rather a person just cut the tree all the way down than torture it (and me) like that.

Nice! I think the mirror is perfect there. It makes the "room" look so much larger and more open!

This room is lovely and serene. I would like to see a little more fabric somewhere.... a crib skirt, or a window valence maybe? I have a washstand just like this, and I was planning to sell it on craigslist. You've inspired me to consider repurposing it instead! The horse picture seems like a brave choice and I like that it sort of tones down the pastel purple.

If I had to offer a suggestion as to where the money went, I would say potting soil. 20 pots = lots of potting soil, and that stuff isn't cheap.
@therese z, you have officially disuaded me from ever owning an outdoor rug. Earwigs have to be worse than spiders. *shudder*

just because the tree is native, doesn't mean it's going to be healthier. a few comments up, leah h said that the american elms and ashes have been devastated by imported pests. right now there are millions of dollars being spent to keep sudden oak death from decimating our forests and lumber industry. want a walnut tree? watch out for thousand cankers disease. it's not enough to just get a dogwood, but you need to get a dogwood that is resistant to the anthracnose that's devastating the native species: get a kousa dogwood instead. i agonized over this very decision last year, and we finally settled on a hawthorne "Winter King". A few months after fawning and fussing over our beloved symbol of putting down roots in our new house.... we found out that it has hawthorne rust. inevitably it will have to be removed. FYI Winter King is supposed to have better resistance to rust than the species!

what i mean is this: it's so hard to find a "good" tree. I spoke to an arborist and he pretty much said stick to crepe myrtles and japanese maples (in my zone 7b).

@Rucy, I'm sure you did everything by the book, but for others who may not know: Please be careful bringing agricultural products into the US! http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/clearing/agri_prod_inus.xml
Of course, these seed suppliers are great ways to get new and interesting international varieties.

@ arcaneincleveland:
SERIOUSLY? I have a room in my house painted almost the exact color and it is not at all depressing. Dark walls make anything presented in front of them luminous. The colors pop off of the objects and thrill your eyes! Why does a baby's room need to be "soothing", necessarily? Can't it be exciting and enriching? A baby will sleep in whatever color painted room one chooses, once you turn the lights off. Your comment was neither constructive, nor does it add to the conversation.

Leah, I love it!

I'd probably Redbox it. But mostly just to see the daddy playdate group interactions. Based on the trailer, that's about the only funny part. There are only so many pregnancy jokes you can make in an hour and a half before people stop laughing and start actually getting grossed out.

Adorable, yes. Torturous, even more so. I am 38 weeks pregnant and would totally find this cruel.... Why not a pretend bottle of wine, while you're at it? (I'm just joking, it's a sweet gift.)

This garden is so lovely! I'm curious if you can use a reed screen like that to hide an air conditioner unit? I have an eyesore of one right in the middle of my view from the kitchen window. I guess what I really want to know is if a reed screen could provide enough air circulation?

Thanks for pointing out the black above the upper cabinets; I hadn't noticed it. I agree that it really does make the ceiling look higher. What a great idea! Good job, Dan!

But I don't understand why you didn't fill in the holes from the old drawer pulls? Do you plan on getting new ones? I feel like this kitchen is still in progress and would like to see the "real" after when it's all done.

As illustrated by many above commentors, celery can be used for lots of different stuff. Do you make a meal plan? If so, just plan to make several meals through the week that happen to have celery in them. I only buy celery when I plan at least 2 recipes that call for it. And then, of course, Ants On A Log is always a hit! Lots of vegetables are like buying bouquets of cut flowers, they will last longer, look prettier, and keep crispier if you put them in water. I will try freezing some next time too. Thanks for the recommendation!

I think this project looks pretty nice in the pictures and I do like that green with the cabinets. But doesn't it LOOK like contact paper when you're actually in the room? I'm just saying that I like it from a distance but up close I don't know if I'd feel the same. When we bought our house, the old people who lived there before us had found some "delft tile" contact paper and put it up as a backsplash: totally turned me off from the stuff. Anyway, very creative for $28!

You can see the smaller version of the Boon Lawn (called Grass) for yourself at Target, they carry it instore in the baby section. I don't know if the Lawn would have sturdier "blades of grass", but I think that it only be strong enough to hold plastic plates, not ceramic.

CD'ed for 2.5 yrs on one, about to start on another:

All you need are the diapers (we used BumGenius, LOVE!), BioKleen's BacOut Spray (available at natural food stores), a bucket with a lid and a handle (we used the bucket that Tidy Cats litter comes in), soap of choice (we used Charlie's Soap and then All Free-and-Clear when Charlie's was out of our budget), and a willing partner.

WILLING PARTNER IS CRUCIAL! If my husband hadn't been on board with CD'ing, we'd have never lasted.
