Sounds like a good recipe to add variety to my summertime menu! I will have to switch the name around to Fava Beans and Fennel Salad with Potatoes, hope no one minds. If I call this potato salad at home everyone will be expecting something quite different from this. You know, that shock you get when you think you are pouring milk on your cereal only to find what you really put on your flakes in your not-quite-awake yet state is orange juice!

I love this idea! With a casement window like this, perhaps I could entice with seed the little finches, sparrows and robins that frequent the tree directly outside my kitchen window, and I could enjoy their colors up close!

I have never tried arugula, but these recipes will have to change that. I know how glad I am to have discovered romaine lettuce and spring greens. I always hated salads as a kid and I found out later, as an adult that this was partially because I do not care for iceberg, which was the only lettuce people considered when I was growing up. So, I'm gonna have to give arugula a go. Thanks for the great ideas!

I like the way this design captures the various shades of green in the asparagus. If I really wanted to serve an impressive Spring meal to guests, I would definitely use this impressive presentation. I'm so glad other people are creative and I just get to come along and benefit, cuz I would never have thought of this on my own.

Desserts with fruit are always welcome for summer. And who can resist a good chocolate dessert? So those are my requests - fruit desserts and chocolate desserts. Or a tasty combination of the 2 perhaps.... yum!

If you've got strawberries to use up and no time to make anything with them, try this combo I learned years ago from a friend. Dip a strawberry in sour cream then roll in brown sugar. The final step is merely to pop it in your mouth! It makes a quick and easy, if not lowfat dessert to use those strawberries before they go bad.

I have to say that I find Alton Brown's advice about metal cookie cutters to be the best: don't have them in your kitchen.
That is the only way I know to keep cookie cutters rust-free - just not to own any metal ones.

I've heard of cake balls, but I've never seen them quite like this. Quite the dedicated decorator to put in such time as it looks like these must have taken. Impressive!

Orange Roughy is my very favorite fish. It is pricey, but oh so worth it! I just steam it with water, lemon juice, the usual salt and pepper and a few other spices and it turns out well every time. Spices that are good are parsley, basil and garlic, or you can substitute thyme or tarragon for the basil. All these variations taste yummy! Just be sure to check your fish after about 5-6 minutes of being on simmer, cuz that is when you start to get into the overcooked zone. Sprinkle on a dash of paprika for color and serve with wild rice and a romaine lettuce salad. Divine!

Thanks so much for this post! I have been meaning to learn how to roast my own vegetables. Most tutorials show cooks just putting them on an open flame on the stove top of a gas range. But I rent and I do not have a gas range, so that's out. I am so glad to have your step by step process because I love roasted vegetables!! I'm excited to try this out!

No wonder this looks just like my copy of Betty Crocker! The pictures and fabrics and tint of the shot look just like my circa 1973 printing of a much-loved cookbook. What a fun trip back in time this photo inspired! :)

Oh, I was brought up too money-conscious to cut off the top portion like that, I must admit! I take a small sharp knife and cut out the core. This often takes some of the less desirable innards with it, saving me a little work later. Oh, excuse me, I think I hear an asparagus and red pepper frittata calling my name....

Some good tips and tricks here. Fresh is so much better than the prepared and pre-packaged stuff that many of us fall into the rut of eating. Thanks for the ideas. One tip I would give for energy: pack a piece of fresh fruit with you. There are various fruits that will help you stay alert. Apples are among the best, plums are good and I'm sure you can find an extensive list online with better ideas than I have.

Muffins are very easy. They can be made ahead of time, are fairly easy to make. Also, with a simple and basic muffin recipe you can make a few alterations and have several variations. For example, put in a teaspoon of jam in some for a sweet difference. Add lemon peel and blueberries and voila! you've got tasty blueberry muffins. Choose to add cinnamon, nutmeg and apples and you have yet another type of muffin to tempt everyone's taste buds! Good luck with your brunch and your big day!

Thank you for this post about the history of waffles. I enjoy learning how things came to be - always interesting! So now I am curious how some of these flat cakes evolved into flapjacks or pancakes, where these became waffles?

Well, I'm glad I read this post. I had never even heard of a potato ricer before today. I looked it up and I guess it is a bit bigger than a garlic press, but about the same idea, huh? The reviews posted here seem to be so mixed I can't decide if it would be a good investment or not. I tend to agree with Alton Brown's philosophy for no "unitaskers" in my kitchen, so is there anything else a potato ricer is good for? Not that I make mashed potatoes too often anyway, I prefer them baked with their nutritious skins to eat as well.

In answer to your question, I do keep baking soda in my fridge and freezer. I also keep a box in the bathroom to help absorb odors there. Another spot where I have a container of baking soda is right by the stove, in case of grease fire.
