I would look at appetizer recipes - kids like things bite-size and colorful. Steamed veggies, fruit, cheese, dips, pieces of meat. They could serve as dinner for the kids, and appetizers for the adults, especially if you'll want to get the kids eating first, so they could then go off and play with each other while the grown ups eat.

Ah, food and toddlers, so frustrating! I keep cooked food components in the fridge or freezer - cooked broccoli, pasta, chicken fingers, cheese slices - and warm a little of three or four items on a plate. My kids might eat just one of the items, or a little of each, but having a choice seems to help. For you, those ingredients can be put together as a soup or casserole or stir fry.

I've started storing things in plastic boxes by theme, like a tea box or a baking box. That way I just haul out the box when needed, and it's easier to clean the box than the shelf.

I like to keep the dishes in the kitchen for plating purposes too, but the eating spoons, forks, and knives can be kept out in the dining room.

I use mine all the time - for tea, for coffee, etc. - but also end up using it for household cleaning things too, like pouring hot water down the drain to help clear it out. The safety aspect (of automatically getting turned off) is also nice for those of us who are younger but can get distracted by our kids!

I really like susanfilm's suggestion of yoga mats. I don't do a whole lot of standing, but I do have a toddler who can get into the cabinets and thinks nothing of dropping cans on the new bamboo floor, so I have been wanting something that covers more of the floor.
