"Get over it." Seems more like "Don't bring it up, it makes me uncomfortable" or "I just want to look at pretty things as I lack the ability and inclination to examine the possible problematic origins of these pretty things." Sorry, not sorry if talking about a significant part of American history (which lasted 200+ years) bums you out, you need to get over it. FFS, it's not to go away because you don't like it. Seems more PC to whitewash the unpleasant parts of history.

Patrick seems like a nice guy; we need people who are passionate about preserving history. Kudos to him.

Also, I laughed out loud at the white person from South Africa trying to give race relations advice to Americans. Talk about the deaf/blind leading the blind.

My move last year cost $800; I would do it again in a heartbeat. Honestly, the thought of starting completely from scratch would have been so expensive; even if I bought used.

Anyway, you can write off the cost of the move on your taxes (if you meet certain qualifications).

Reading these comments makes me so happy I live in Austin. Gorgeous city, excellent access to great hiking/camping sites, "Live Music Capital of the World," SXSW, a booming tech industry (Google, Apple, and Facebook all have offices here), bike-friendly, birth city of Whole Foods...oh yeah, and I live about 10 minutes from downtown for about $700 a month/700 square feet.

I spend all day working on a computer, looking at a screen. In my free reading time, I love the feeling of holding and reading a book. E-readers hold no appeal to me.

I think unabridged meant that the Togo looks like a glorified beanbag, not that it cost as much as one.

Nothing about this couch appeals to me. But different strokes for different folks!

Yeah, clearly the conditioner advice is for people with straight hair and not for those of us with curly or naturally dehydrated hair.

I could NEVER get rid of conditioner (regular or leave-in). I have, however, replaced shampoo with an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse. All natural, gently clarifying, and leaves my hair super smooth!

My parents were EXTREMELY generous when I moved back home. I graduated in 2008 (right when the job market really started to sour). They let me move back, no rent, no bills (they even paid for my car and health insurance!). I did get a part time job at Bed, Bath, Beyond a week after graduation while looked for more permanent work, which I found in January 2009. They continued to let me stay rent and bill free until I moved out in July 2009 (but I did pay for all my furniture/deposits/moving expenses). I did do all the laundry, much of the cleaning, cooking, and grocery shopping without any prodding.

I don't think being this generous will work for everyone. My parents could tell unemployment was really wearing on me, that I wanted nothing more to become independent as quickly as possible. I also never asked for money in college except for help with some books and I don't ask for money now, so maybe that factored into them letting me stay at no cost. Also, they got to claim as a dependent on their taxes for two years.

I don't think it's more "mature," just more expensive

Disagree with the above. I LOVE Chris's place. How did this happened? Simple, more people voted for these places. Everyone gets one vote, and the vote is based on opinion. More people (that voted) did not share the above opinions.

Chris, I think your home is outstanding, despite what the naysayers think :)
