PS- We still haven't figured out how to keep the many feral cats in the neighborhood from passing through the rest of our yard. It's a kitty highway and drives our two indoor cats crazy. We tried various predator urines and it didn't work, they just wash away and I didn't care to religiously maintain them. We hope to plant flowers and bushes that are natural repellants, at least near the basement windows. Good luck. Ideas For Dealing with Neighbor's Cats? Good Questions |

We built a raised bed for veggies the other year and it was clear from the start our many neighborhood kitties thought they had just been given a new, deluxe litterbox. One inexpensive pack of bamboo skewers solved the problem. They are sticking out all around the perimeters, sharp side up, and every few inches inside while veggies are still small- until lettuce, etc, gets big enough that they won't try to walk on it. No cats actually harm themselves- they are cautious creatures- they see that it would be uncomfortable to pick their way through the sharp spikes and they just move on to easier pastures. Thank you so much for sharing! The kitchen is full of inspiration! We live in SE Portland too (well, we are "deep SE") and it's fun to get a vicarious peak into another Portland home, especially one whose taste overlaps so much with our own. We have some of the same vintage finds in our own home! And, yep, that same ikea bamboo lamp that I both love and feel shamefaced about. Charley & Jessica's "Patina Clean" House Tour |

Can you paint the walls? I think the cabinets could be do-able, but I would want to paint the walls white- and work some bright green and dark brown objects in... Another way to brighten up the space would require some basic carpentry skills- you could build a counter with a lip out of well sanded and white painted plywood, that would fit over that dark brown counter. I agree that carefully removing and storing the upper doors could be an option too. I would warn against contact paper or fabric. Cover Rental Cabinets with Contact Paper? Good Questions |

Another artist here- I make everything from little 4x4" to 48x48" paintings. Galleries (and many clients) frown on arbitrary pricing systems, so most of us artists find ourselves charging by the square inch or a similar system the more we deal with galleries and buyers. In addition to that, the cost of materials and the difficulty of creating the piece in your limited studio space and transporting (or even worse, shipping) those big ones add a lot to the cost. I have a guy selling my stuff for twice as much across the country as I charge locally, and I don't feel bad about that in the least, it's a lot of work to pack them up, and a lot of money to ship them. Which is another good reason to check out your local artists. How Much Would You Pay For Oversized Artwork? |

Money. No matter how we try, even the most casual bbq winds up costing us a couple hundred. We always freak out at the last moment and buy more food/cheese/booze than we can afford. What Keeps You From Entertaining More Often? |

Melmac's solution, wrapping it in tape sticky side out, is sure to help. I would bait Basil with a roll like that, and try to introduce a new toy at the same time. Help! How Can I Stop My Toilet Paper Shredding Cat? Good Questions |

If you are thinking of doing it definitely get crushed gravel over pea gravel! We put in plant beds and did the walkways and middle area with crushed gravel, it's dark gray and looks great. The crushed tamps down over time, something the pea gravel will never do. We got a few stone pavers- all we could afford- and artistically placed them in a walkway. Over time as we can afford more they will be easy to add. Gravel Landscapes |

You need an enzyme cleaner. I have found that Anti-Icky-Poo is superior to Natures Miracle- and that Consume is superior to Anti-Icky-Poo. Consume is an industrial strength enzyme cleaner, it's not cheap but one thing of it will go far, you mix it with warm water and spray it on. They say you only need a 10% ratio of it to warm water but I do @ 30%. Sounds like you have a really nasty case, you will want to spray it heavily and let it really soak in. It eats away the bad stuff and leaves a faint pleasant odor that you only notice if you stick your nose right up to it. At least you know where the smell is coming from, when you can't find the source it's even worse. Good luck! And I agree you should be getting a rent reduction at least. New Lease Deal Breakers |

I far prefer the After, I think this was beautifully done. However I wasn't immediately sure when I looked at that very first After shot- it was only after seeing the others which include your furniture and lovely arrangements. That very first shot reveals a spot that still asks for something- perhaps a kick of color via artwork or another table at the base of the stairs. Anyways I think it looks wonderful. I feel your modern tastes are well integrated into the house and it appears to me you were respectful of the traditional molding and details when you painted. Lovely!! My attention was immediately drawn to the mirrors- any suggestions on places to find mirrors similar to the two shown in this post? They are exactly what I need in my bathroom, I've been looking for months... LakBDesign's Controlled Color House Call | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |

I've had this elaborate plan for ages- intending to construct and paint a box for hiding cords out of molding that will perfectly match the 8" tall molding that runs along the bottom of our walls. It's one of those projects I can never seem to get to with all the other work to be done. I never thought of just using some colorful boxes! I love this idea! Did you see the more recent post about hiding electronics in plain view (in which they show a black tv against black wallpaper.) Maybe you can paint the wall behind the couch the same color as the couch. Then, of course, you'll have to paint the other walls a complimentary color that not only goes with that difficult color but "sways" the whole feel of that color, from awful to good. I think it can be done. Not sure repainting your entire room was on your agenda but that's my two cents :) How Do I Make My Big Green Couch Work? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |

I love it because you see the beauty of the wood first and foremost. If I saw it for the first time in someone's home, with a lamp on top and whatnot, I probably wouldn't even realize the shape is CA. Which is a good thing. Hot or Not? The California Desk | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |

I like to keep my hair dryer and curling iron in a lidded basket, which resides on the floor beneath the pedestal sink. I have a travelers heatproof sleeve for the iron, so I can store it in the basket immediately after use. A friend of mine had a ceramic pot that she kept hers in, which looked nice too.
