I also have 10 foot tall ceilings and it wouldn't be practical to have them go to the top. I don't want to have to get a ladder out every time I need something stored up there. The Biggest Kitchen Design Mistakes House Beautiful |

White girl here who also suffers from the splotchiness and racing heartbeat. My hands and feet also get really itchy too! I find a bunch of things can make it worse: I stay away from liquors and stick to beer and wine mostly. Also, whether I'm in public or at home can make a big difference too! If I'm with a new group of people, half a glass of red wine can do it, but if I'm at home its generally not a problem. Weird! Asian Flush: Why I Turn Red When I Drink Alcohol |

Oh, I should add that there seems to be the impression that this is an okay practice among young people, but to be avoided among older folks. I am 28, and probably in the minority among my peers in disliking this so much. Table Manners: A New Cellphone Etiquette? Los Angeles Times |

Unacceptable, unless what you're checking on your phone will somehow benefit the group - taking a photo, checking on a fact for everyone, etc. If you pick up your phone to check your messages, make comments on social networking sites, or because you just thought of something clever to add to Twitter, I will immediately think that you have become bored with my company. I really hate when people do this. Table Manners: A New Cellphone Etiquette? Los Angeles Times |

Oh man, I've been wondering this too. I have a kitchen with 10 foot ceilings, and it would be so nice to be able to use that space up top. I would love to hear opinions from people who have these and if they are worth the money. Sliding Library Ladders in the Kitchen Kitchen Inspiration |

I have never heard that it's bad form to mop up your plate with bread. I do it all the time! Why waste leftover deliciousness? I would love to hear from someone explaining why they find this offensive. Mop it Up! The Etiquette of Cleaning Your Plate with Bread |

I have a couple of pull out/sliding trays in my kitchen cabinets. After I painted the cabinets they didnt want to budge. I melted some beeswax with olive oil and let it reharden again. I swiped it over where it was sticking. They pull out easily now! 10 Household Uses for Beeswax |

I've been using my own homemade soap (oxiclean + borax + fels naptha) for about a year now, and it works great and is so much cheaper! I would get a special grater you use only for detergent though, I'm not sure if its safe to make it in a food processor you then use to prepare food. On The Soapbox: Handmade Laundry and Dish Soaps |

A dehumidifier is a necessity in our house. We keep one continually running in our basement throughout the warmer months. I have an 100+ year old house with a dirt floor basement and it gets unbelievably damp and awful smelling down there if we don't keep one going. Also, it helps keep the house centipede population in check! They're attracted to moisture--we had a big creepy problem with them before we got the dehumidifier. Do You Use A Dehumidifier? |

I just recently painted my black cabinets white, and was debating whether to bother with the insides as well (which were the original brown wood.) I am soooo glad I decided to paint the insides--it's so much brighter inside, making it a lot easier to find what I'm looking for. Plus, I think it just wouldn't have looked as nice if I'd left it brown. Things I put inside do stick a little, so putting down a liner or paper is probably a good idea. I'm trying to come up with a low cost solution for my terrible countertop. (I'm talking pink, then a hastily painted coat of white, then contact paper.) For me, $250 isn't cheap. I'd rather spend that kind of money toward a total replacement rather than a temporary solution. However, Rustoleum also sells a much cheaper $20 countertop paint. Also, I found a company called Giani that sells a faux marble countertop paint for $50. These are options I'm currently considering, and I'd appreciate any feedback from people who have tried these! I grew up with a washer and dryer in a closet in the kitchen. It's very easy to let the kitchen table turn into a semi-permanent waystation for clothes and linens to be folded or put away. We were constantly clearing piles at mealtimes. If you're a bit more diligent about putting the clothes away right away its a great location though! Inspiration: Washers & Dryers in the Kitchen |
