Love the push mower for our small yard. We can mow early without fear of bothering the neighbors, and the push mower doesn't mind wet grass as long as it isn't too long. For a small, relatively flat yard, they make perfect sense.

High-quality knives back when I was 21. Still have them to this day. In fact, all of the basics in my kitchen were gifts from the first several years of my 20s. I never could've afforded them on my own, and I love to cook.

Very few people buy artwork specifically as an investment, which assumes you have significant disposable income. Most people buy art because they love it, and the investment part of it comes into play when they want to justify the expensive purchase. Art is worth whatever the market will bear.

Awesome! This achieves the thing I love most about before-and-afters, which is when an "after" looks like it's always been there.

Be realistic with yourself about how much time and money you can devote to fixing things up. Owning a home, especially one that you want to change, can be time-consuming and expensive. If you don't enjoy spending your time on projects, buy something finished. Or at least finished enough that renovations won't start to drive you crazy.

Meredith, you've done something dangerous here. You've created the sort of home where guests come to stay for a long weekend, and end up camped out for weeks. It's homey and comfy and gorgeous, with lots of places for the soul to rest and breathe. Beautiful.

Minimalism is an extremely difficult aesthetic to pull off, in my opinion. To me, it's not just lack of stuff. It's more about what IS there than what ISN'T. It's about proper use of negative space. Really, really hard.

My friend has a nice-sized landing in her house, and she uses it for yoga. She keeps a small trunk there that houses her yoga props.

If the first picture is not staged and is actually from someone's house, my guess is that it's an experiment that will be abandoned.

Ann, thank you for sharing your incredible home. Having the opportunity to take a peek into uniquely personal spaces that cannot be replicated is so inspirational, and one of the reasons I'm a fan of AT.

I don't see why not, especially if you can roll it in and out without starting the engine. My husband used to park in the lobby of his office every day. It was never a problem.

ADizzle - kudos to you for having the best conversation starter ever by carefully placing a fire engine outside your house just as your guests were starting to arrive. Bravo for your foresight! Even the shy had something to talk about that night...

This is such a good gift for kids going off to college and/or moving into their first place. Thanks for the reminder! (I think I'll call my dad tonight and thank him again for the tool set he gave me 15 years ago!)

akay - that is hilarious, because it's true! Sometimes I'll invite people over BECAUSE I need a deadline for getting something done around the house, i.e. cleaning out the coat closet or raking the yard. My current deadline is getting the dining room painted before Thanksgiving.

My feeling is if you can pay cash, and what you're buying is a permanent, heirloom-quality purchase, take advantage. If it's between a new sofa and your rent, just walk on by.

I have the elfa system as well and I love it. I also thought it was a little pricey. If you sign up for Container Store emails, they send out 20% coupons pretty regularly. At least it takes the edge off.

I really love the openness of this space and i think the white looks absolutely gorgeous. But I do have a beef with the styling. If you were to actually sit on one of those awesome beautiful stools at the kitchen counter, wouldn't you be roughly nose-level with the counter?

Plenty of natural light is my #1 priority when looking for a new place to live.

Fortunately, I've never lived in a place where I had to leave the premises to wash clothes. I can't imagine what a pain that would be to haul your stuff across town, not to mention that I almost always do some other house project while I'm doing laundry. And I'm thankful that I haven't had to collect quarters for laundry in quite some time.

And sometimes we take things for granted, like plumbing being behind walls. We stayed at a friend's grandmother's flat in Paris (I know, boohoo for me), and the shower, which was tiny, had exposed pipes! My husband had to actually step out of the shower to turn around, because if he didn't, he'd run into the hot water pipe and burn himself! We've decided to remember it as "charming."
