I think it depends on the city. As a former Vancouverite but current London resident I am a city girl through and through but long to bring boy my little boy in my idyllic hometown. For me the museums and cultural wealth of London is not a good enough reason to deny my son the freedom walking home from school, or biking unsupervised in the neighbourhood with his friends on a summer afternoon to get up to mischief. - you know, things that *childhood* is supposed to be about.

While I appreciate all that London has to offer, I also don't appreciate all that London has to offer. It is ridiculously expensive, rude, dirty and NOT child friendly (most tube stations don't have elevators for a stroller). And despite inventing the language- few people here can speak it correctly.

I think Vancouver has truly the best of both worlds with its beautiful landscape, decent public schools (not existent in London), universal health care, abundance of cultural events, polite and diverse population and child friendly lifestyle.

Unfortunately I'm stuck in crummy London where everybody swears like pirates, drink like fish, and are football crazy. Boo.

I bought some black polyester fabric at the local market for £1.50 a metre and sewed them behind our existing ikea curtains in the baby room. Its pretty amateurish and crude but it works a charm and i spent almost no money and no time doing it. cheap and cheerful is fine with my baby - he's no fashionista... yet!

Our Shiba hates being furminated but its the only thing that really works. We have to furminate him two to three times a week when his coat "blows". During this time he we need to hoover and dust everyday. And don't even think about cuddles! His fur will get everywhere- even in the fridge! Definite downside to a shiba.

I know this isn't really answering your question but...

Isn't 18 months old enough to be potty trained? All of the children in my family were potty trained by 8 months. In fact, most of the children I know have all been trained within their first year- even if they couldn't walk. As soon as they were able to sit their parents would just plop the baby on the loo when given a potty signal, and then wait for elimination.

While I was in college, I lived with a Brazilian girl who was a complete drama queen. She also ate toast without a plate, never tidied after herself and spoke at the top of her voice at all times (but truly these were the least of her offenses).

I confronted her about her behaviour and asked her to be a little bit more considerate. When she freaked out and made it all into a big drama by instigating racial slurs at me I sought revenge by peeing on her toothbrush, spraying Detol on her fruit so it would go off quickly, turning the lights off in whatever room she was in, and taking an *extremely* long time in the bathroom when she was late for work.

This all worked and within 2 weeks she moved out. I do not advocate the kind of behaviour I demonstrated but it did work. and she was racist...and painted her bedroom walls terracotta.

When I was single and suffered heartache I would write lists. List of top 10 things I wanted to accomplish in the next 5 years that do not require the assistance of another soul (be it man or woman).

For me it was the sudden change of plans that bothered me the most, even though of course I might miss my ex- the uncertainty of the future was more daunting.

Actually Baby Yaga, you were talking about what my concerns are now that I'm pregnant. Well its true, my ability to tolerate smoke is the least of my concerns (although it wasn't when I was suffering from morning sickness- it was actually one of the top concerns as my nausea was all consuming).

What is currently at one of the top of my concerns is bringing a baby into a world of judgmental, dogmatic freaks who try to impose their stoic viewpoints onto other people and get offended when other people might voice a different opinion. (please notice my lack of exclamation marks because I'm able to convey a calm and rational sentence)

If I was you I would stop worrying about what my list of concerns should be and start to consider what kind of "guests" I invited into my home before I tarnished all smokers with negative stereotyping.

I love smoking and my husband all of our friends smoke. We have never smoked indoors no matter how rainy and cold it is. Unfortunately I recently became pregnant and went right off the smell of smoke so that means not even the out door space can be a smoking area. I hope once the baby is out I'll be able to be reasonable again with the smell of smoke. If there is one thing I can't stand is an anti smoking nazi!! hehehehe

Pi Pa Kao is a wonderful, effective and very tasty Chinese medicine that we always have handy around the house. You can have it by the spoonful or mix it in hot water as a soothing drink. I swear by it, and its delicious also! http://www.ostenzenherbs.com/ninjiompeipakoa-p-185.html

Thanks for all the nice comments about our fireplace and our dog. Both my husband and my doggy love it. We just moved into our new flat and haven't had much money to decorate it, and we definitely didn't want to do the cliche candles thing. We thought the doggy mattress was cheap enough and cute. Thanks for the suggestions anyway!
