Something I've thought about too, also since starting on Instagram recently & I realised that I have a deep need to be liked (by people I respect) & this is one of the reasons I enjoy it & share my life to strangers! It kinda justifies my life somehow - sad really, I know I shouldn't care. On the flipside, I'm a voyeur and love to peek into other people's lives...though, the reasons are probably similar - somehow justifying my little existence!

Not saying that everyone is motivated this way, just why I do it! :-)

D is a very nice Windsor chair, so I would guess that but I have no idea about American antiques! A is the most unassuming...hmm...

Oooh yum - I look forward to trying this recipe as I usually use buttermilk. The key thing that you mentioned is "working the mixture as little as possible" and also to give the flour a good airing when you sift it so they're light and fluffy! :-) And yes, scones don't keep well, so either eat them or freeze them (usually we don't have leftovers!)

BTW - ninakk - totally agree with you, I love my DUX bed and did a similar calculation over 30 years!

Oh - I like your theories. I would have to say I'd agree with them all too! One question. While you are testing beds, are you keeping the same pillows? Perhaps that is next year's test once you've found the "best" bed for you? :-)

BTW - our car cost 600 euros. Yeah - I chose to spend the money on our bed! :-)

Oooh...you DEFINITELY need to try the Duxiana bed then...it has 3 sections within the mid level mattress that you can move around depending on where you prefer support - my husband and I use a slightly different setup (for my hips)...I looked at the Hastens which was slightly more expensive but couldn't justify the horsehair, though, I am curious how they would stack up! :-) The top end Hastens definitely seemed more comfortable in the store...

Thanks Susan for another great article with inspiring photos! What I am having trouble with though is noone ever talks about the floor or flooring in kitchen design (it seems). We have colour on the floor in the way of natuaral stone and so our kitchen design is a little flawed because it doesn't 'go' with it. Eek. But anyway, have you written anything about kitchen flooring colours / materials as part of overal kitchen design? :-) I'd love to read that!

Just painted a kitchen wall with chalkboard paint in Petrol Blue. Lovely colour, however, the painting could be called patchy, at best. Any tips on how to get this looking smooth? I found the paint dried so quickly - it rolled on to the wall and seemed to dry instantly so couldn't get it smooth! The paint wasn't cheap, compared to normal paint, so I don't know if I should just buy more of the stuff in the hope it will improve with more layers or to just forget it and paint over with normal paint! Help??

Just discovered this via the felt doors how to and have to say I am totally impressed!!! I thought we were doing well with 55sqm (about 590 sft) for us & the bub (tho it was an attic, so a third of it was sloping ceilings, which is just fine when you're under 2 feet tall). The 2m x 1m bathroom, I was most proud of! I thought places in Amsterdam were small but it seems that they're smaller in NY. :-) The thing I like about small spaces I have to say is that they make you 1) Clear out all the cr*p you really don't need & 2) Think outside the box & more creatively, both good things. You guys will continue to be an inspiration!

OR - just get rid of that enclosed shower completely and open up the space. :-)

Wow! And I thought I'd seen awkward spaces! :-)

What to do totally depends on your budget of course. Are you standing at the door when you take that shot or is there more room in there (doesn't sound like it)?

I think if you could afford to, I'd make the wall to the shower a half wall all the way across to the window wall. Put your sink on that half wall & build a long long sliding drawer under it (to fit the length of the nook and how far you can actually pull it out!) that you can store all sorts of things in. You'll also have a shelf for your daily shower items and some nice daylight shining into the whole space, which now seems to be blocked by the shower wall! Move shower head if necessary (you don't have to put the pipes in the wall if budget does not allow, just make sure they're a feature to suit the retro style!)

Oh & probably put a mirror on the end wall (where the nook ends) but you could probably also fit a full length mirror on the wall where your current sink mirror is.

Good luck!

Comfort: I have had 6 IKEA white Gilberts for the last 3 years or so...they are comfy, especially with the added pad (I found this useful as I work all day on my laptop at the dining table and find it helps the me not get a numb bum) but otherwise very comfortable, even when I was pregnant! The fact that there is a little give in the back makes them more comfortable I think. My husband is 6 ft 1 & I am 5 ft 6 and we both are comfortable with the height of the seat as well but we are not particularly large/heavy people, so that might make a difference.

Cleaning: They are indeed very easy to clean - most stuff just wipes off but, yes, some things get stuck in the join & require a little bit more effort to remove (like a vacuum).

Unfortunately, 3 years and endlessly wiping the kids mess has meant some of the white colour is wiping off the chairs, particularly on the edges but it looks like they could be quite easy to repaint after a light sanding.

Storage: As someone else said, they are also stackable, which, if you don't have a lot of space OR only entertain large groups occasionally is very useful.
