terrific post Anna! every woodworker I know has been inspired by his work. and i'm glad you focused on his zen approach. turning trees into beautiful furniture takes skill, but it also takes soul. nakashima continues to be a sort of spiritual compass for the woodworking world.

i vote for more woodworking legend posts! maloof? krenov? frid?

veslabeachgirl, actually the second and fifth pieces are made from "spalted" wood, a process that occurs when trees are infected by fungi! a while back, i wrote about spalting and other types of wood figure. you might find it interesting: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/watching-your-figure-grain-patterns-natural-defects-and-more-woodwise-096927

Fun post Annie, but you forgot the hunkiest of them all! Don't ask me how I know his name, but Jared Walker Dostie on Rate My Space takes the cake!

Au contraire, petit souris! Woodturning is the most eco-friendly branch of woodworking! All the turners I know reclaim unused wood from tree removal services, hiking trail cutting crews, landscapers, construction sites, etc. They often buy their own chainsaws and mill up all those trees that fall in inclement weather. Turners do the world a service by repurposing this precious wood into something functional and beautiful! So excuse my rant, but the "definitely not an ecofriendly item" comment couldn't be further from the truth!

Good point Medusa, I should have been more clear -- while the stair treads are pine, they were installed atop a douglas fir frame. In fact, we used doug fir in all of the wall framing. Our inspector stopped by last week and gave us the go ahead!

I'd be more concerned about the cost of the lumber! These days, barn wood (especially thick posts and beams) costs a small fortune. Using reclaimed siding or flooring would be cheaper and result in a less chunky, "fall down and kill someone in their sleep" look!

Great find Annie! I've never seen such realistic CGI -- the building materials look so textured and weathered and believable.

I'm glad my article has spurred some debate and appreciate it when readers chime in with additional advice. Keep it coming ; )

hi readers! sorry for the late response, this whole blogging thing is a lot of work!

vanessa, we should definitely meet up when i'm back in NYC -- us CFC folk gotta stick together! i told PK and Brian you said hi...

robin d, when i spoke of movement occurring "across the grain," i basically meant that wood expands across a board's width. (since the grain runs along its length.)

iheartwood, so far i've only worked with ash, walnut, oak, cherry and maple. i love walnut for it's beautiful purple color and golden sapwood, but maple has some really gorgeous/quirky figure. oak is a difficult wood to work -- we don't get along so well anymore.

greetings readers! to answer your questions and comments: yes, no, yes, yes, no, no, kinda sorta. jk!

anusha, i agree, it's sad how shoddy furniture is these days. even the best furniture makers are forced to cut corners because their craft is greatly undervalued. elee, this may sound catty but most furniture out there bears only a facade of craftsmanship. if you're looking to buy a serious piece, make sure you get under the table or chair and "kick the tires." often it's just solid trim with metal brackets holding a bunch of chipboard together.

larchgirl, the drawers fronts are made of walnut, the sides cherry. as for if my pieces are for sale, SURE THEY ARE! I'll be moving into a shop shortly after my course concludes and I'm looking to line up some commissions! keep posted on woodlearner to see the final piece by the end of next week.

asinner, and to think i was worried people wouldn't catch that last line! i'll be sure to drop some more predatory lending jokes for you ; )

thanks for all the kind words!
