Re: distressing...I've used the candle technique and it works. I've also used several layers of paint, then abused the piece with a variety of tools, whips and chains (okay, not whips...).

I have killed ficus and have killed succulents (though it takes some effort, I succeeded). What I haven't managed to murder, however, is the ponytail plant, which survives beautifully in my cube without natural light (and sometimes without water for a couple of weeks at a time). It's in the palm family and has a vaguely Seussian look. It's the only plant I've allowed myself to have at work because of its hardy temperament. Highly recommended!

Did you repaint the lockers (if so, what brand paint did you use?) or were they that great orange when you snagged them?

I'm not feeling this particular series. Mattress shopping is so subjective, not to mention a very occasional purchase. Why devote all the bytes to something so few of us are actively engaged in?

Anyone know how to clean hair dye off a (painted) kitchen counter? Magic eraser didn't work.

I'd like to weigh in on the cowhide, though it's months after the original post... for what it's worth: I agree that cowhide is icky. I wonder how many vegetarians are subscribers to this blog - i bet quite a few. there must be some cool alternatives. Otherwise, a really sweet little project. Can't wait to find one of those cabinets at the Salvation Army!

I just painted a ten dollar goodwill chair (scallop-backed) using the DIY technique (2 parts paint to one part textile medium, which I bought online and received in the mail yesterday). It turned out beautifully and much better than expected. I will heat treat the areas that will come in contact with the body (back and seat) to prevent the paint from wearing off although some people say it's not necessary. I highly recommend this technique and I cannot wait to find another bargain so I can transform it with paint!!
