What Color Would You Paint this House?

Peonies are my favorite flower (remove ants by soaking the buds underwater). They're lush, look wonderful in bunches or floating, and smell great.

However, I've not had much luck growing them in the bay area. i did have one plant that seemed like it might live (part shade and LOTS of water) to flower, but I moved before this happened. A new peony bush takes about two years to bloom after planting.)

I'm in Mich. now and can't wait to try again.

Lindsay, I've gotten that color from antique maple using just an application of teak oil. Otherwise, it's a tough color to reproduce, but honey maple is close.

@bboettner They make wire baskets that hang under those. I've seen them at Home Depot and maybe the container store. Look in the closet organizer sections.

Heh. I once took out my CL furniture frustrations by writing an illustrated guide for sellers. It got flagged down in under an hour, but I ended up with an overflowing inbox all the same.

What a shame, because NOTHING in that shop is real vintage.

I've never had much luck with regular planners or electronic calendars (forget to write things in, forget to look at them), so I customized a system.

I use 5x8 cards that fit in a stand on my desk so they're always in sight. One has a weekly calendar for appointments/reminders, and the other is a prioritized task list.

In addition to this, I a small clipboard "docket" on my desk pre-printed with areas for logging contacts, shopping list, bill tracking, passwords, etc. At the end of a week, those items get noted/filed where they belong. The finished cards are filed by month and give me a great record of what I've been doing.

I meant to add: my grandmother for many years used a bare thornapple tree (the same one every year) and covered it with glass and silver ornaments. People were always stunned, and it was thrifty and ecologically sound to boot.

Artificial Tree vs. Real Tree: Pros and Cons

Some vintage trees are amazing. That said, i couldn't do an artificial tree any more. I like the idea of supporting the local economy much better, although we usually go with a small tabletop tree. This year we're using lichen-covered birch deadfall branches in an urn with fairy lights and recycled glass icicles-looks like winter in the forest and will last years with care.

You can do this with an empty (unused) teabag. Snip the top off, stand up in a tube, light.

Haven't had much of that with my husband. the ex had a hideous collection of mementos, including a plastic "horny devil" figurine and a horrible ceramic skull with bleeding eyes that was a gift from a High School friend.

Nowadays i'm pretty much left to do whatever I feel like doing. My husband's tastes run to eighties style wall-of-oak furniture, but he's happy so long as he can reach his computer.

Bah humbug. I looked everywhere for that house after seeing the movie, because it's the only place I've ever seen a table like I have...but not one picture I can find has my table in it. :(

I scan them. The best ones every year i print and mount in scrapbooks in little frames- about 2x3" each. The kids love going through the years to see how their art has improved.

After scanning, we mail them to the grandparents, etc., so everyone gets to see it and nobody feels their art was mistreated. :)

Don't paint it, stain it- cement stain works great on brick, esp for removing that mottled mid-century look.

I think there are some chores you should always at least volunteer for- dishes/kitchen if you're a frequent dinner guest, that sort of thing. Helping out sick friends/new parents/etc. is almost always okay (although dog walking and meal cooking are probably safer choices).

Anything else would have to depend on the relationship. i have a few close friends who will help me clean when guests and vice-versa, but we're close and have similar ideas about cleanliness.

If you don't, then I think you could definitely be unwelcome- in situations I remember where the fussy friend "helped" the slobbier friend, it was never taken as a friendly favor. I remember a number of blowups that started that way.

Green or teal-green hued field tile, or geometric black/white field tile. I think plain white would dress down that lovely wood- I'd approach that as a frame waiting to be filled with art.

I'd also scuttle that awful brass/black door for something nicer (those are really easy, if a little messy, to replace).

Like so:
