as an american in Paris for 23 years and with french nationality, its not the nationality that makes the meal but the personality. I've been to many French dinners where yes there was champagne but it's not "obligatoire"...people are very happy with àn orange juice believe it or not. and in 23 years i havé never seen a handwritten menu. French women are like all women the world over-multitaskers, working, busy with family etc....being elegant and understated? just being yourself is more like it. and for the wine list, again, goes without saying that the wine should match the food, which is the most important. MIT doesn't have to be beautiful, but working with the food. I'd say number 5 being universal says it all for the French as well....this post is a bit ridiculous and cliché... the left side of the kitchen which is not seen in the photos contains the sink, counter space and both washing machine and dish washer. all water related things had to be there. thus my inability to move around the cabinets. the drawers and the fridge are where they are because it would not have been possible to put them to the left of the oven. plus all the ikea cabinets had to be modified because the walls are all at odd angles and not one is straight. everything had to be modified because of this problem. my original idea was to intergrate the butcher block into the line of cabinets not be seperate. and also to use the empty wall to the right. but again, not possible. the fridge is to the right of the oven. the biblioteque idea was a way to express the overall look. it certainly doesnt look like a typical kitchen. it was a real challenge, including pulling hair and sheading many tears, to make it work. the space is 5m2 or 50 sq feet. i am a big lover of french subway tiles-they differ slightly from the new york ones as they are grooved and have a distinct bevel (spelling?) around the border. and they come in traditional colors from the paris subway-dark green, gold, brown and blue andof course, white along with newer, more modern colors like metallic grey and bronze. they also have a brighter sheen so even if youre not a tile scrubber (i am not!) they keep on looking bright...i have them in 2 of my apartments so if anyone wnats a photo sneak peek i'll be happy to send them off. i'd just like to comment on the clock, the yellow bar stools and the blue blue pool...its all real. i rented this house a few years back and it is more fabulous in real life than in the 4 photos. too bad we can't see the bedrooms (3) (mine being the green room and besides being en suite and huge had some fantastic chinese painting of a woman with blue skin) and the study. ask terry to send you some photos. its is a real piece of long island caught in the snare of mc mansions and phoney blahblah. i love it! unfortunately they won't sell!
