I've seen faux pressed tin in a roll and it looked really good! It's made out of a material that's waterproof and heat resistant and can be painted, too.

I read about some people who put a large plant pot next to a busy street. They placed a microphone into this pot and played the live transmission over a speaker. The acoustics of the vase turned the street noise into amazing music that covered up the traffic noise! It's bizarre but it really works.

Some less unusual ways: fountain, windchimes, privacy screen covered in star jasmine or potato plant, white noise machine.

I have a fawn pug and he sheds enough fur for me to actually knit another pug! Next time, I'm getting a black pug--they go better with my clothing and decor!

My husband freezes his jeans, and it works great! They retain their indigo color (8 months now and they still look almost new) and there's no bad smell. He spot cleans them to remove the occasional stain.

Our two-year-old calls them "chilly pants."

I remember when Kia made a bedroom look like a gravesite, complete with (fake) grass- and flower-covered casket bier!

I don't really want to associate my bedroom with death, but it was interesting.

I read that the homeowners who ended up with Hildi's hay walls spent 17 hours scraping it all off.

Cool house, Praveen!

The framed photo of the Senator Theater reminded me of college in Baltimore--fun times!

Did you by any chance go to high school in Connecticut?

Chartreuse will now be known as Freedom Green!

Grellow. Really?

Grellow is awful. It sounds like some BoBo made-up boy's name- "These are our children, Grellow and Moxley."

Slightly OT...does anyone have a suggestion for a terrific chartreuse? I want to paint my bedroom ceiling!

I'm a former Florida resident, and Palmetto bugs are THE WORST. And mosquitoes. And black racer snakes. And the freaky huge spiders. I agree with most: South Florida does suck balls.

I lived in New York State for years, and the huge, nasty black flies in August are pretty terrible.

Now I live in Central California. Haven't had any issues with bugs in 7 years.
Although we do have these things called Stag beetles that are as big as Palmetto bugs with a HUGE claw in the front.
Those give me the willies!! (Though they have the decency to just live outside among the redwoods.)

I saw this movie (which I thought was lame), and I loved the interiors! I kept thinking, "Man, it'd be fun to have 5 minutes to run through that set, snatching up as much stuff as I could (a la Supermarket Sweep)!"

I wouldn't really expect a fully practical apartment from a show where everyone wears 4-inch heels.

It's really gross-funny that the "Butt" part of that towel is brown.

There is, in my mind, a great nobility in being poor(ish) and still having a beautiful, personal home. Rich people who have great houses has never blown my mind, because it seems expected.

That being said, if I had the scratch, I'd probably get help with some things that I DIY now. Having been poor once, I hope I'd maintain my pioneer spirit, but with better quality stuff.

Mosquitoes (and ticks, too) HATE brewer's yeast!

Put it in your morning OJ and after a few weeks you won't get bitten so much. (It works for your pups, too--just add some to the kibble.)

@EllenKim

TheoJ was trying to defend me from the surprisingly acrid replies to my very mild post. I got into the name-calling a bit myself, and I'm sorry if it made your experience here less than pleasant.

I'm happy that this is a forum for design advice and opinions and I think that the diversity of those opinions is terrific.

Happy Summer, everyone!

Countertop, definitely!

I also think you could paint one room in a day or less. Get some pizza and beers and invite a few friends over to help!

@Patrick -- My answer mentioned 2 instances of inexpensive-but-quality couch purchases. So there's your answer.

@TheoJ -- I am one of the poors, and my house is still beautiful! Take that, Gwyneth!
And what a shame about the lame commentary; I usually enjoy Patrick's posts (although bepsf almost always has something snarky to say).

Edit: I've gotten 2 Mitchell Gold for Restoration Hardware couches from Craigslist. One was $175, one was $200, and they've been terrific.
