I love the color balance (white IS a color) in this room, and the unique placement of the radiator, and the practical and novel shelving surrounding it. The rug is a scene stealer but all the other details deserve attention.

I'd be wary of the problems caused by painting the brick, from what I've read.

I lived in a dome in the 70s in the mountains in CO (yes I'm that old) - it had a half loft and sat on a four foot wall: the point of the wall being so cabinets would fit in the kitchen. It was 39 foot diameter. It was really easy to heat with wood. You could whisper into one wall and hear it on the other wall. We had skylights in the panels so there was plenty of light. It was very cool on summer days. The temperature was very stable, the most stable one I've ever lived in year round. I would never use the insulating foam at this point, but perhaps they have new products that are not so toxic. I am sure that one could create a similar environment with a traditional home. Domes are hard to finance and therefore hard to sell. "Nonconforming" etc.

Those cabinet are some variant of European frameless cabinets. Styles don't really get dated so much these days- someone else may love to have these cabinets (especially at a decent price) while you may not. they look like birch or ash, which is a really nice wood. If they are solid wood, you are really lucky. If the bottom cabinets are square like the top ones, I'd keep them because I think that's a nice look.

they do this in Great Britain a lot but it's usually a large room that extends off the rear of the (Victorian) house into the back yard. It's not the kind of thing people get a view of much, but the interior space is so loved, it's not an issue.

That's not a huge room. How about something really comfy that doesn't take up a lot of space, like a Herman Miller Aluminum group chair, black or you can get them in cheery colors like Green to offset your neutral scheme?

the Eames LCW are incredibly comfortable too: how about a pair in black?

What a great bunch of comments. I want to see an 'after' photo. Personally I'd paint the lower cabinets dark gray, now that I think about it.. to give my eye a horizontal line to follow in the kitchen- to ground the whole thing. What fun!

I don't have a link but there was a post on some blog about a famous chef in Paris who had a smaller kitchen than this- and it was cute and cozy like this one. Advice: reorganize maybe but since it's a rental appreciate the cottage feel for the time you are in it. It is so cute, and not cold and austere like many kitchens that are shown.

thanks for sharing this kitchen. It's not what I would have done but I might not have known what I like so well if people didn't put their work up!

I would put the right end of the section to the right of the fireplace- a separate place for reading or napping. Too bad we all have the conundrum of the TV being the focal point. Nice place.
