We have a teeny tiny bathroom and I love the look (and the extra storage) of the shelves over the toilet, but is it just me that keeps thinking about all the germs that would just cover everything there? What is it that they say? A 3ft spray radius? And what would it be like if someone did not close the lid first? I'm not a germaphobe... but there seems to be a good amount of logic to keeping things like towels and supplies away from there. Anyone know of a good solution to gaining that space back and avoiding the over-spray?

Funny... The last place I would want to use it would be in a Taxi (who knows how good their drive is?) or while on holiday/vacation (where I am not as familiar with the roads).

We travel a lot and have one child. We bought a secondary cheaper (yet still met all the safety stuff) car seat and a cheap second hand double stroller for traveling. I put my son in one seat and his car seat (with the diaper bag sitting in the car seat) on the other seat. Sure we get some funny looks... But I don't have to play pack mule with all the stuff, my child is safe, and there is always room for a friend to come along spur of the moment.

We have this same kidkraft kitchen in retro red. I bought it for my son at 18 months and he plays with it all the time. I would say go for it!

Lol... I never thought I would see the return of the green grass shag. I had it in my room as a child and l-o-v-e-d it. My parents painted a life sized four wall mural in the room and the green shag was meant to be the grass...

I guess as an adult I am torn too. On the one hand, I have such fond memories of carpets that looked like muppet monsters and fraggles... On the other hand I wonder if some things are not better left in the past... And I adore vintage.

If I saw it in someone's home I would think it was great. But NOT something I am likely to be using in mine... At least not for now. (You never know ;)

Thanks for the walk down 70's memory lane...

I am not being snarky (pinky swear) but it makes me laugh (in a sad way) that most people just assume that children's allergies are to nuts or gluten... Kids are allergic to all sorts of things... And you never can tell what someone is, or may be allergic to when you are talking about class and school parties.

I am the mother to a toddler who is allergic to soy (as in he stops breathing) so I feel like it is my responsibility to make sure he always has something to eat and drink when we leave our home. A party would be no exception. I appreciate it more than I can say when another parent tries to include my child in the party food, but I would never expect it. (And quite frankly, the allergy is so nasty, I prefer not to risk it.) It is up to me to make sure that my son grows up understanding things like eating a cupcake can make him really ill, that some things in life are not fair, and that not everyone is a nice person.

The exclusion of my child due to his allergies? I would feel sad for my son if he felt sad. Because it is a difficult lesson to teach a child that some things are not as we would like them to be.

for me... it has always been about getting down... down on the ground to get the full shot w/o the wide angle lens... to get the least amount of shadows... to get the perspective of really being in the room. don't be afraid to crawl on the floor climb on a chair or a ladder, and twist into some creative positions for the angle. my other tip, set things up like how you would if your in-laws were coming for a visit, then like the rule about jewelry, take a few things out of the shot... less is more.

I actually agree with Nellymom... If the idea is to inspire others and share what it being done, trendy or not... to create and share the trends, showcase what others are doing well, then fantastic. But to question things afterward? Sounds a bit like trying to have one's cake and eat it too :)

OMG! I was so thrilled to see this question posted as we are having the same problem/dilemma!

Here is what we have discovered thus far:

a) tried the coffee grounds method... no difference. only now we have coffee smell mixed in with kitty pee and poop :(

b) there are about 10-15 *strays* that are fixed and the neighbors *feed* and for some reason, they love our yard to use as their litter box. bad enough for the smell... worse when your toddler picks up the poop and ewww... you feel me right??

c) can't get a dog, allergic... but thought that it might be worth borrowing one of the other neighbors to mark the scent. so far, no good.

d) we have peed in the yard ourselves... and tried to spray the furry culprits with the hose when we see them. but they are too smart for any of that.

e) we have a large yard and they love every part that has dirt in it.. and the grass too. we have cemented soooo much of the *yard* that to do anymore would be like living on a parking lot... with no place for our boy to play... and the little devils use the planters to go in also :(

y) we have done the pepper thing and the ammonia thing and the chasing the cats off the lawn/yard/driveway/property thing... but I think that really, they just laugh and mock us after we go back inside defeated...

z) I too would love some fresh ideas. we don't hate the cats, but fixed or not, the stuff really REALLY stinks and we are at our wits end...

So... Two years later... I came across a mirror so close to one of the UO mirrors in this post. At a Home Goods Store in the Bay Area. And loved it! It is going into my toddler's bedroom (at his eye level) so that he can see himself while he learns personal grooming and dressing... His room is globally eclectic and has a handmade and vintage vibe. So this is perfect. It is not something that screams out elegance or high end, but I think that it is something a little more creative than the usual cartoon and muppet figures that are so prevalent in children's furnishings and rooms. (And if it sparks even half as much of an aware, opinionated, and thoughtful byplay from him when he gets older, then I am even more in love with the mirror. Whether for good or bad, there is something to be said for the thought provoking things around us...)

My brother's farm does this! (I had never heard about it until they were telling us they were expecting a new Wwoofer... Wwoofer?) They love it and are registered with the Wwoof site...

(If you want to check out their farm directly...) And here I thought that just FAMILY had the privilege of getting to stay there for two weeks every summer :) Lol... We do have a good time though... I recommend late summer... Mmmm... Fresh veggie season, but I am a squash, tomato and blueberry lover...

I say let them try to be cool by trying to be the best at saving the planet... No harm, no foul... We all win for the so called competition. They win because they feel superior, we win because they are living more responsibly. And the planet wins for every little step taken...

I used to have all white... Loved it. The texture of the materials used really shows this way. And she is right t is calming. I always felt like I was on holiday or at the spa. (If a bit of color is needed, you can always pull out a few pillow or duvet covers... The DH had other ideas... So now we live in a colorful home. It is a more vibrant life... But there are many days I long for the calm again.

Another question for Scott: Who makes the dishes, what are the pattern? Love the (yellow?) and black rims on the white plates!

@ patrick (the other one)- trust me that thought runs through the Mama brain every single time. And then that same brain thinks how can I tell my kid to not steal if I had... So you go nuts-crazy looking for a d-o-l-l... (If I had been told just two years ago I would be this obsessed over a doll, I would have thought the world had lost it's marbles... Turns out it was me :)

@mnm_mom: I have a feeling that depending on what you wanted, ie, custom embroidery, rush to be made, etc. the dolls would vary a bit in price. They run about $75. When I was looking on etsy, this price fit in with what I was seeing for many of the similar dolls, and in some cases, it was quite a bit less... (And I can vouch for the quality of the doll after seeing the Museum dolls and now having one of our own.)
