Another here!here! for the love/hate relationship. The website subscription aside, I'd warn people to not order their cookbooks off their website. When you check out, a fine print clause commits to you their cookbook buying program. This may have changed since then, but a few months after my purchase, they sent me a cookbook I already owned w/ a nice note saying I now owe them money.

I cancelled my subscription & vowed to not give them any more of my money because of such surreptitious business practices. (...that being said, I'll probably check this one out at my library. :P)

The America's Test Kitchen D.I.Y. Cookbook by America's Test Kitchen New Cookbook

Congrats! I'm 6 months pregnant so I'm doing the same thing. So far, I've been trying out recipes for different breakfast burritos - one with the tofu scramble recipe from PPK and another with eggs, soyrizo, and country potatoes - both turned out really well.

My all-time favorite vegetarian cookbook is the 'Moosewood: Cooking for Health' and several of those recipes freeze really well. Just one batch of the whole grain pancakes goes along way for a quick breakfast. I also have made and individually frozen black bean burgers which can be quickly defrosted and eaten with or without a bun.

Also, it isn't a meal...but I've heard that oatmeal is great for nursing moms so I've collected a few oatmeal bars to try out (dessert and breakfast recipes) as they'd also be easy to eat one handed.

I typically bring a bag of salad-ready kale and my small repurposed mustard jar with the Kale Tuscan Salad dressing (sans breadcrumbs) from 101 Cookbooks blog (I think the recipe was also featured here once...)

My other favorite is to bring arugula (and maybe some spinach), an avocado, a mango and a lime with me to work. I'm lucky in that I kitchen at my office a place to prep the salad fresh, squeeze the lime over and add a little salt.

I read recently (now I can't remember where) that mashed potatoes will freeze better if you add a raw egg to the mixture. I haven't pulled the shepherd's pie out of the freezer to test it yet - so I can't verify the results. It might be worth researching though! :)

On my first day of sixth-form, a girl introduced herself and invited me back to her house for "tea." I was 15 and had been in the UK for a week (living with people I'd just met) and was still unfamiliar with the new lingo and customs. We ended up walking to her house where (to my surprise) we had Coke and Kit-kats.

It wasn't the 'tea' I was expecting, but being invited to someone's house and being served something small... in retrospect, was a great way to start feeling at home where I was.

I second the Joy of Cooking frustration! I made their banana bread from recipe a 2nd time because I assumed I must've done something wrong for it to taste so awful. Nope! Nasty recipe!

Baking recipes are a little trickier for me to scrutinize, but I do it with cooking recipes every time. :)

I looooooove watercress! Moosewood has a simple watercress/cauliflower soup that is a staple quick recipe in my house.

I've tried the Gourmet watercress/avocado salad and it was amazing! Can't wait to try these others.

I hate to be a downer, but I second Daffodil's remarks. The art station from a crib is a great idea and probably a lot of fun for the kids...

...but I don't think it is up to the same design and aesthetic standards as other similar projects that have been posted.

These are a definite staple in my house! I heat them under the broiler or in the toaster oven at work, for a warm side to my cold salad or as a snack to have with hummus or baba.

We also use them for "pita" sandwiches at least once a week. I love that they aren't as dry as most pocket-pitas.

The post heading 'garbage disposal nightmares' made me shudder. I have heart palpitations any time I have to stick my hand down the disposal. It's completely irrational but I am terrified it'll turn on by itself.

I also have the same (but less irrational) fear of the meat slicer. The meat slicing scene in 'The Wrestler' almost gave me a heart attack!

...but glad you got your glass out. :P

At a baby shower this weekend, someone gave the Mom-to-be 'The Creative Family' book as a gift! I'd never heard of the blog, but this woman said it is her staple gift for friends who are starting a family. That had already peaked my interest - but after this feature, I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks!

I think defaultname gave the best advice - whatever recipe you decide on, practice making it before hand! You'll feel a lot more confident and nothing is worse than serving a recipe you've never made before and having it not turn out!

Good luck! :D

In my experience, most thieves (when caught) will give a reason they felt "justified" in taking what wasn't theirs. 'It was just a little XX...' 'They wouldn't even miss it...' 'I just "borrowed" it' 'I pay taxes so I'm entitled...' 'They owe me anyway for XX...'

A few of these comments run along these lines! If someone else has put their time, energy & money into something (even if it's a business or the government) - leave it alone! Or ask politely before you 'clip', 'borrow' or steal something outright.

That said, we have to chain our planters down. :(

I just made a big batch of 'breakfast burritos' because I had a lot of produce that I didn't want to waste. I made the Post-Punk Kitchen's Tofu Scramble with mushrooms and spinach and wrapped it up in a whole wheat tortilla with some potatoes I cubed and cooked with salt and pepper. They froze really well and have been really convenient.

Otherwise, I usually have veggie burgers on hand (Moosewood: Cooking For Health has 3 or 4 of my favorite recipes for these...) rice and beans and some kind of soup.

One of my favorite frozen items to have on hand is Trader Joe's Naan Bread. If you do freeze any curry or dal, it's the perfect 3 minute meal. :)

Awesome! I have relatives in Africa that have made us throw pillows in the past using a similar technique (but I believed they painted the patterns freehand.)

Do you think this would work for a tablecloth? Would you need to put a sealant on it?

@jmorri26 - I used to use the pre-roasted chickens the same way! But I found that buying whole chickens and roasting them (or cooking them in a slow cooker if I'm in a bind) is a lot more cost effective. Then I can use all the left over bones for stock.

I need to take some hints from this post and organize my freezer a bit more!

If you're looking to boost your nutrional intake and cut on running the oven/stove during the summer - I think a better bet would be on a toaster oven or a rice cooker (like reddylee said.) I use my slow cooker for stock, beans, and large portions... but even when I venture out to recipes, they usually lean towards the heavy 'comfort food' variety.

When I was cooking for myself in college and wanted to eat healthier - I would try to use a few hours (whenever I could find time!) to prep my groceries, snacks and easy meals into easy, portable single servings. And like Lia_Bia I relied on frozen vegetables for a quick healthy side...

Good luck!

If you can't find anything you like online, I'd suggest browsing through Indian cookbooks at the library/book store.

I love the cookbook 'Indian Home Cooking' by Suvir Saran. He has some great drinks - including lassis, chai teas and a sparkling ginger limeade (which is my favorite to serve to guests as it's very pretty!)
