I agree -- she's adorable and you are a great sister-in-law. It seems to me that you already have your theme -- a picnic in the park. You could do sack races, a pie-eating contest (3 yr olds love silliness), have cold fried chicken, potato salad, watermelon slices (big ones!), and lemonade. She's still very young, so nothing elaborate is really needed -- I would save the elaborate themes (as fun as they are) for next year and beyond. It really doesn't matter what you do -- a party in the park with that many people will be more than enough (I am actually of the one-more-guest-than-the-birthday-kid's-age crowd, so forty guests is huge to me). My kids both went to a Waldorf grade school and are so much the better for it--I just wish there was a Waldorf high school nearby. I wholeheartedly agree that screen time needs to be strictly limited, for so many reasons. My kids love the Marx Bros.! Thanks for shining a light on this issue. Craiglist, if you are near a large city. I bought my Room and Board sectional for $900 off the Chicago Craiglist, when the same couch was still selling on the RB website for about $3200. Yes, I checked to make sure it was very clean. It worked for us, since I have two kids, three cats, and a very small house, so things get used (and abused) alot. Re Taherold's comment -- I wonder if some pebbles in the bottom of the bottle would displace the otherwise wasted oil. Just a thought. Get Lit: DIY Wine Bottle Torch J. Paris Designs |

I made a batch of this, followed the recipe but added some sliced fresh ginger and a spoonful of raw local honey. Incredible! I will make this all summer. Springtime Refresher: Dr. Oz's Green Tea, Tangerine and Mint Tonic Recipe Review |

My favorite Julia quote: "you've got to have the courage of your convictions!" She was talking about flipping something in a skillet -- a potato pancake, I think -- but it so applies to life. Of course no one -- not even Meryl--can say it like Julia did. I so remember coming home from kindergarten and watching Romper Room then the French Chef, what a combination!
