Another possible arrangement would be to lay down an area rug diagonally in front of the fireplace and place four chairs on either side, so all essentally face each other; a coffee table in the center. Create a second, conventional sofa and 2 chairs, seating area further into the room or along the wall

P. S. I suggest you don't do anything with this piece, especially stain or paint it. It's much more valuable as it is.

I believe it was used to store a English-style long-handled crumb/dust pan and brush set. This company also made furniture for greenhouses.

Have you considered carpet squares? They can be configured in many ways and if one gets dirty, you can just replace it.

Also, bound carpet remenants are great. I one bought four lavendar runners and taped them together on the back with electrical tape, then laid them on a carpet pad. Looked great.

My suggestion is to pull the eye away from the railing by staging the landing wall, or if you can, painting the landing wall an eye-catching up-beat color and leave the stairs alone.

If you include something prominant and black in your staging, such as a black planter, table, etc., the stairs will appear less prominent.

Your glass partition is great. It conveys the illusion of separation but keeps the light quality. For privacy you might consider two other options. You could install a curtain wire and dress it with "curtains" made of small industrial metal balls. They provide movement and interest. Instead of this option, you could stand a tall pole with a swing arm against the wall and drape the industrial metal ball curtains from the swing arm. Against the wall, the curtains look like a sculpture. Move the swing arm and the curtain provides privacy. If you don't like the idea of an industrial look, you could use almost any type of drape but something with movement appears sculptural and well as practical. Let us know what you decide to do and good luck! Lynn
