I have had the style with the swing arms fail on me a few times. This one is affordable and uses a simple mechanism with fewer parts to break. Will never use another style!

I echo aschy. If you are exercising hard enough to warrant liquid nutrition (an endurance athlete), soaked fruit will never cut it. If you are more of a casual exerciser and calories don't matter as much then go for the fruit in the water to be a natural way to have flavorful water. I've tried several homemade recipes for liquid nutrition and have tried using fruits/nuts/eggs as nutrition, but there's a reason companies like Hammer Nutrition have spent years understanding and perfecting their recipes. They work and are pretty dang tasty! After researching nutrition, saying salt is the key component in a good sports drink doesn't seem to fully grasp the research and success of products like Hammer.

If you want to know more about what the body needs from a sports drink for endurance athletes, this is the best free resource I've found yet:

Homemade Lara Bars are such a great snack. Dried dates are my favorite, but prunes, raisins, figs and apricots work well!

I bought uniform bottles from http://www.sunburstbottle.com/.

Am currently using up a ton of spices that I bought in bulk. After they're gone I will lean towards getting them from Whole Foods.

Homemade nutrition/solid food is a good idea for most workouts, but solid food isn't feasible in some situations. There are times when it's best to get all of your nutrition from a mix you've put in your bottle, a Camelbak or a flask which is more difficult to make than a PB sandwich.

Two things I've found that work well are:
-90% honey and 10% molasses mixed in a flask with water to get it to your preferred consistency
-Maltodextrin - You can buy 50 lbs online from bread stores for a little over $50. It's a lot to have around the house (2.5 5-gallon buckets), but it is easy to mix in bottles and with recovery drinks. Maltodextrin is THE main ingredient in almost all energy gels and MUCH cheaper. You can add in electrolytes and soy protein to mimic Hammer Perpetuem or add fruit juice/honey/other flavors because on it's own it tastes bland.

Personally, I think that the litter problem is not solved by convincing people to make their own nutrition, but about changing people's mindsets. I will ride with a sticky jersey pocket to avoid littering and almost all my cycling friends are very careful not to litter. Also, I doubt that the litter problem would significantly decrease due to cessation of accidental littering by athletes.

Now, if someone could just tell me how to make Strawberry Stinger Waffles. :) Mmmmmmmm. Those are the best!

From my experience, an empty stomach is best for workouts that are done earlier in the day. If you can't workout within a few hours after getting up, then eat a light meal like a sandwich and time the work out to be about 2-3 hours later. Nuts/banana type snacks are okay, but for endurance exercising an empty stomach (or as close as possible) + liquid nutrition during the workout is ideal. Wish the nutrition tasted as good as some of the above mentioned pre-workout snacks. :)
