I think these are all great recipes and I wonder if you pureed some of the "throw-in" ingredients (i.e. peas, basil, kale, etc.) into the sauces with a little parmesan, if that would help get it into the picky eaters?? I have two little ones, one if which is EXTREMELY picky and have learned to keep a small puree machine on-hand for times when I know he will look at the "green stuff" and then shut down the whole meal entirely without trying it. Is it so bad to try and 'hide' these ingredients in these awesome dishes and then leave them whole for the ones that will eat them? I think these are great, healthy ideas for the dinner table and the pastas can certainly be substituted for whole grain or brown rice pasta........thanks for the ideas!!

Love it! Love the use of yellows. And I've always liked that rug from IKEA, but never had the guts to buy it since it's so light for us having kiddos running around. Would love to see the rest of the room too. :)

These are awful, I agree. A surprise for a Trader Joe's product, because most of their stuff is great. I agree with some of the other readers, Bob's Red Mill is really good (and the best, in my opinion, when it comes to gluten-free mixes.)

I look to this website for ideas, not aesthetics necessarily (although I think there are a lot of postings that cater to that need as well.....) I think most people who have kids are looking for function more than anything (and if it looks nice, that's an added bonus! I like things to do both!) This is not something I personally would do, but it's a great idea for re-using a crib or having a double use of a crib. Comment #1 was a super downer and I feel sorry for the person who was proud of this project having to read it as the first posting. This project may not be inspirational to you, but may be to others....after all, this blog is not catering to just one person, but many. (And thanks Ohdeedoh, for not being snobby about posting things....it's nice to see the indulgent, the thrifty, the artsy, the 'real person' and everything in between showcased in your blog. Makes people like me feel less intimidated.) :)

I think it just depends on what your needs are. If you have kids in the house, especially babies, then you might need more. I made my own baby food and also would heat water on the stove to warm a bottle in while I was making dinner for the rest of the fam....... so that was 4 burners going at once! If it's just you and another, I say skip the other two burners!

Love my neighborhood and love dogs (hoping to get one soon too...) but people who walk their dogs and let them pee on your lawn really irks me. The pee kills grass! I really wouldn't care if it were on the strip of grass on the other side of the sidewalk, but really, we just spent some $ to put in new grass and it really bothers me that people don't realize it causes dead patches all over! Plus we have a baby that's in the grass all the time on his hands and knees, so I basically have to either be grumpy and put a sign up, put up a fence, or just keep him off the lawn. I'm doing the latter. :(

Wow, never would have thought to use spray paint on something like this! It looks great! The mid century look is getting a lot of use these days, so I applaud you on steering a little away from it and making something unique! How did you make sure the spray paint was even and non-drippy? I need to know this secret because I'm terrible with spray cans!!

Wow, love the dark wood detail in this room! It's very cozy and warm paired with the yellow. And love the crib color!

I was just thinking that another good idea for these things would be a dollhouse....you could paint them, put in different levels and maybe even stairs, etc. The kids could paint the inner walls or make "wallpaper" for them. For boys it could be made into a fire station with a pole going through the levels!

By the way, what is "MCM". I may be showing my decor ignorance by asking, but I haven't a clue what that is! :p

Wow, this was like taking a museum tour! So interesting! I wish I could live in a house like this but not with a 9 month old and 3 year old....both boys.....maybe when they're out of the house! Very cool featured house!

CANDY! Most parents are so hyper strict about sugar these days, so let the kiddos have a little fun and sugar!!! I don't let my boys have a lot of sugar at all on a daily basis, so it makes these holidays SO MUCH FUN when they can have junk!!! It won't kill them. :P

Just did a search for mexican decor since we just bought a "Spanish-style" hacienda home. This home is beautiful and I love the color schemes.....Shocked by the nasty comments above mine though! Was there a part of this article that I missed that described these owners as bad people. Our new house is only 900 square feet (and boy would we love to have more room...) but I certainly don't resent folks with more cash than us!! I think they did a great job and I'm getting a lot of ideas for our bathroom from the way they did theirs (on a smaller scale, of course!)

DEfinitely a concern for peeps that come into regular contact with these items, but seriously, don't we have enough to worry about!?!? Or shall we all live in a bubble and not touch anything?? I say, if you're really concerned, then don't buy these items. Hopefully, companies will start to take this into consideration in the future, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.....There's probably hundred other things you use on a daily basis that will eventually be "bad" for you in the near future.

true tmoore....formula is new to me...(I nursed my first exclusively, and my second JUST started a couple of bottles a day of formula, because he gave up nursing earlier) My 9 month old has probably injested ants and dust and hair just from his crawling on the floor.....but formula is EXPENSIVE (I learned this just recently when I went to buy our first container of it) and I certainly don't want to pay $25/per can for milk with bugs in it.

I've been trying to get onto this website for a while to see if my formula is included in the bad batch (beetles and larvae?!?!?) but it's not allowing me to get there.

Too...much...stuff...and....knick-knacks.....phew! This place is cool and eclectic, but it makes me tired and itchy just thinking about all the dust and cleaning it needs. I agree with some of the above comments and also that a few cool vintage things are awesome in a home, but too many is just overkill and takes away from their 'specialness'. ;P Love the color scheme of the place though!

Very wasteful, in my mind. Especially in a time when we're trying so hard to be "green". Get rid of them when they're worn or falling apart....other than that, try to use them for as long as possible! I can understand replacing food items and even toothbrushes, but things that can be washed and sterilized.... why????

I'm a teacher too...now a stay-at-home-mom....and my son is now in preschool. I always just loved a nice card or note from my parents and students. THat was all I needed to hear....how much they appreciated me and that all the hard work I put in was noticed. Especially since we teachers put in A LOT of time for our kiddos, but don't get paid even close to the "big bucks"!!

If you want to give something, I think gift cards are great, even in small amounts: for coffee, at a local craft shop (those can ALWAYS be used by a teacher), etc. I also loved getting a small plant in a pot (not cut flowers) because that's something that can last or be planted in a yard. I love little succulents and they are really inexpensive and don't need a lot of water (good for those busy teachers!!)

We get a ham every year from my husband's company and two of my fave things to do with it besides freezing a lot of it is eggs benedict and 7 bean and barley soup with ham. The trick with the soup is to take the bone out and boil it for a couple of hours to make stock with lots of 'hammy' flavor. Saute up all the veggies in olive oil and what ever else you want in it....add the beans and barley and then the stock. The VERY last thing to add is chopped up ham. Don't boil it with the soup because it just turns to rubber and is tasteless. Add it into the soup right before you serve it. The soup and a grilled cheese are a delicious comfort-food meal!!
