Just finished the last spoonful of a bowl of cheerios with a handful of pistachios, some dried cranberries, and almond milk when I read this.

I had to giggle when I read you bought the branch (I thought, wow, Utah really is a desert, I guess...) but just want you to know I have no children but was drawn in by the deer mural - I seriously was hoping it was a wall decal I could purchase! It is wonderful! so awesome you made it with your sister.

This looks delicious and I'm excited to finally break open my jar of tamarind paste and try it! The nutritionist in me, though, wants to point out a tiny flaw in the wording "complete and healthy meal" - it is certainly healthy but in nutrition-speak the word "complete" as used here implies that this meal is a complete protein source. There isn't really any protein in this dish, even with the rice - just sayin'. Vegans who may be ending their day with this supper and are realizing they haven't had much protein yet could sub quinoa or a rice/quinoa mix, or I bet it would be terrific with a can of chickpeas mixed in. Otherwise, I can't wait to try it. (with a sliced hard boiled egg on top!)

The first 30 seconds of this exercise were amazing - I sat on my couch (itself not often something I do) and stared ahead at the wall, chair, and four inherited art pieces and masks that have been sitting on the ground there for months, part of the clutter I'm trying to deal with. I looked up at the wall and realized how exactly perfect they would look if I simply hung them on that wall, arranged with the other 3 pictures already there. It was so extremely obvious (the theme and coloring even go well amongst the pieces) that I was incredulous I hadn't seen it before.
I am in this room every single day.
I hadn't SEEN it before.

@rangda I made these just now, a trial with a few tablespoons of canned. I put them in the salad spin a gave a whirl, then dumped onto paper towels. They did look like they had a sheen to them, but I was rushed and didn't even pat them with the towel, just into the oven and they are fantastic! I also really played fast and loose with the proportions since I was trialling, and they are pretty darn yummy, so I think the recipe is forgiving (in my proportions I probably went heavy on the olive oil and that might be why)

another tip is to add a splash of vinegar - it helps soften the bones so the minerals and good stuff are extracted.

Regarding the salt early or not question: I have a Cooks Illustrated page taped to my cabinet (Mar/apr 2010) that says: "Dried Beans: Brine 'Em! Forget conventional wisdom warning against salting beans before they're cooked. Our testing revealed that adding salt to the overnight soaking (2 tsp/qt water) - in effect "brining" the beans - yields better-seasoned and more evenly cooked results. "

Seems to me it's blogs and websites like apartmenttherapy that have outdone, in my opinion, any value that a mag like Whole Living might have once offered. Except for the special-splurge feeling of an occasional impulse purchase at the checkout counter when one of the photo shoots just wows me, I get my fill of high quality design, tips, cooking et cetera right here on the internets. Especially AT.

I am intrigued by this...you pay $28 per person but bring essentially everything yourself, except table and chairs? How do people bring in all the lovely candlesticks, dishes, clothes. glasses, wine, and then all the food as well? With the numbers of people participating I imagine you can't be very close to your car...Wow...

The version of this I know and love has a much higher ration of cocoa powder to avocado...maybe that's what's not working for some previous posters. Here's how I make it (and no one will guess its avocado, trust me): 1 avo, 1/2 cup unsweetned cocoa powder, 1/4 cup maple syrup, and 1/2 tsp vanilla. Blend to pudding consistency, chill. It's super rich - one avo makes enough for 2-3 I've learned. Sometimes I add cinnamon in it. It's truly incredible.
