I was impressed with how smoothly color choices went for a friend's new house recently. She asked her girls what colors they wanted, then came home with paint in a shade of that color that she found acceptable and with a name that would be meaningful to each girl. Everyone was happy, and I wished it would work for my child, which it absolutely wouldn't have.

I went a different direction when my 7yo wanted to paint her lovely lavender room black recently, and until she wanted that, I thought I was a cool mom. We've compromised by painting her furniture black and going with a soft gray on the walls and the bright green pops of color she picked after looking at a collection of gray bedrooms with black furniture that I put together for her on pinterest. She's happy; I'm happy, and we had an honest discussion of why black wasn't going to work for *our* house, even if it is *her* room.

I have both, and the Target ones are definitely flimsy in comparison to the well made Lil Davinci. My only complaint about the name brand version is the hanger type. It's that saw-tooth type, and my kids knocked my first one off the wall and broke the glass.

The out-of-town aunts, uncles, and grandparents in my kids' lives love our wish lists and will call a few months before Christmas to remind me to do a little updating if I haven't already.

I'm also a fan of the "birthday baskets" a small, locally owned toy store keeps for birthday boys and girls. They have pretty baskets that children can fill with toys that appeal to them before their parties, and the baskets are then labeled and left on the birthday basket shelf for party guests to check or not check for ideas. There's nothing forcing the parents of party guests to buy something from the basket, but I think it's very helpful when the party is for a classmate whose home we've never visited and whose toy tastes are unknown.

My now six-year-old was very interested in escape when she was three, and I went to the hardware store and discussed my options with someone. I wanted a latch of some sort for way up high, but the man I talked to made me run from the store in guilt when he pointed out that I'd be locking my child in, even if the house was on fire. I still think that she was more likely to escape and get hurt while I took a bathroom break than she was to meet her fiery death, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy the latch, and she soon outgrew the phase anyway.

The entry deadline is my birthday, so I'm going to take that as a sign that I'm going to win. That's the only thing it could mean, right? ;)

Oh, wonderful! There are books of wrapping directions! We've been borrowing our kids' playsilks for this purpose for years, but I'm pants at making it tidy.

We like to make a scavenger hunt bingo game ahead of time. We can cater it to the time of year and type of trip. Items might be things like a tree with orange leaves, a blue truck, a black and white cow, a field of flowers, etc. We like to have stickers ready to cover items we've already found.

I don't cut the gift budget to throw a matchy matchy photo-op birthday because I have had to acknowledge that the sort of party I like to throw is at least half for my pleasure, maybe more like 60/40 since they kids don't really care about anything other than balloons and cake. We're kidding ourselves if we pretend that toddlers care if their parties are Ohdeedoh worthy events.
