For one of my godson's baptism (so, slightly different occasion & separate from regular gift), I gave the Jonathan Adler pop menagerie bird box. I already knew it fit in with their nursery decor & that they'd have space for it. It's also minimal enough that it could go in any room of the house & blend with their style. Of course, not only did it go with their nursery, the symbolism of the white bird/blue drops was perfect for a baptism.

Easter baskets fall into the 'major tradition' category for me- meaning I don't care about the look or style.

We have one basket per kid (you always have the same basket- they double as seasonal decor). They get filled, wrapped in cellophane & we hide them. My parents get VERY creative hiding too... a minimalist look would make it almost too hard!! We had trouble finding flashy, obvious baskets sometimes! lol

That said, I could totally do the minimalist thing (this basket included) for the rest of the decor... :)

I know not everyone is ok with taking paint chips & using them, and while I doubt I'll change anyone's opinion, I figured I'd at least share further details on how I got them. Before even taking one, I not only asked if I could take them, I explained my plans and offered to pay for the chips. The clerks knew exactly what I was doing with them and that I did not intend to buy any paint for this project. They actually encouraged me to take more (which I did not do)! It also happened that the Behr representative (who restocks the chips) visited while I was collecting them, and he too, had no problem with my actions. FWIW, I also use this line of paint exclusively and quite often.

I'm sure that doesn't change anyone's opinion, but I feel justified in my actions and attempt to pay for the chips. And at this point, I'm just thrilled that the stairway no longer looks like a dungeon! :)

I would LOVE to hear if anyone has this & how well it works. We have one little shelf that barely fits our bath products, and I hate lining them on the edge of the tub. I feel like this seems great except that it can't be that easy to get bottles in/out of those tentacles... right?

Ok... that first pic. Adorable. I LOVE it.

I'm all for cheery yellow amid bleak winter. A couple weeks ago, I painted yellow stripes on my nursery ceiling!

LOVE these!!! I got a ton of reproductions of old WPA posters & one of my favs is the "Be Kind to Books Club! Are you a member?"

If you scroll down, you can see a close up of it in my old library -since been redone- but that poster is still there! :D

I finally sat down & really focused on our extra sitting room - which is now our library! We painted it black, as the room gets a lot of light, and we LOVE it!!! So cozy and warm!!

My issue with this isn't the height or the camouflage aspect of it either. Electronics need ventilation... clear & simple. My techie husband would FLIP if I ever suggested this- he insisted whatever held our TV/box/HTPC needed to be fully open on the front and back. Without the ventilation, electronics die faster, overheat often, have more problems, and our HTPC wouldn't be able to function...

For me it's about being able to properly maintain your stuff... If the owner doesn't watch tv much & is ok with the risks, fine. But I don't think it's wise to market this idea to masses who may or may not understand the potential consequences...

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE OTR! My favs are Shelrock Holmes, The Shadow, X-1, and Jack Benny. The old commercials crack me up too. :) I'm a huge fan, and the best place to get access to almost ANY old show is at http://www.rusc.com/

The guy who runs it adds new shows almost every day & has built quite a collection. They're all in the public domain, but he does charge a small fee for access (to keep the whole place up & running)- plus there's no limit to how many you can download! :)

I've done versions of both the felt ball wreath (but with much cheaper pom poms)
http://www.cozylittlecave.com/2009/12/diy-pom-pom-wreath.html

and the wrapped yarn wreath

both were super easy & I still love them!

if privacy is an issue- I'd recommend Emma Jeffs window films- I used them for my kitchen window where I needed light but had a HORRIBLE view... love, love, love them! Functional & gorgeous- without 'covering up' the window too!

I used to be OBSESSED with foxes all through grade school... no longer obsessed, but they're the most elegant/stylish animal out there imho!

LOVE all of these! I'm the same way- the whole shebang comes out with fall lol. My fav tablecloth is a marimekko one I scored for a steal at a crate & barrel outlet one day. :)

Buying a piece at a time can still leave you without the whole set though- it might get discontinued to fast to finish off the set! But then- at least you get to have a couple pieces I guess. :)

My grandfather's wedding present to us was a gorgeous colorful quilt my grandmother (who passed away when I was little) had made. I love it too much to use it & risk the wear, so we hung it proudly in our guest bedroom (literally, the only wall space big enough for it!).

I've always used a comforter, but this summer it wasn't cutting it. We had a duvet & tried putting a super light insert in, but still too warm. Ended up (skeptically) at Target in the market for a coverlet. We got one from Dwell Studio & LOVE it! It's the perfect material/weight/thickness for summer!!

Quick question- how long did it take for them to look ...presentable? I'm trying to figure out if I can do this to trees I already have in our window boxes, or if I'll need to get new trees started and eventually replace them all. I'd prefer to use the ones already there! Thoughts on if it'll look awful?
