We recently put a an IKEA Brimnes twin storage bed in our toddler's nursery and are very pleased with the low price and versatility of this model. IKEA describes it as a "sofa, single bed, bed for two and storage in one piece of furniture" -- and it is. While our child still sleeps in a crib, the Brimnes is currently a spot for bedtime stories and cuddling, and occasionally for accommodating one or two overnight guests. In the future our toddler will graduate to this bed, with extra space for a friend to spend the night by extending the bed to a "double-wide" -- two twin mattresses side by side.

I'm surprised no one has already said Thermapen digital thermometer. I just got one after throwing away a series of broken $30 thermometers. Plus, I feel more confident that I can splurge on a pricier cut of meat without worrying about overcooking it just to be sure it's safe to eat.

Clear or black ponytail holders are a little more durable and better looking than rubber bands for holding together excess slack in cords, and still cheap too.

I recently bought a chef's knife and a bread knife from IKEA's Slitbar line for around $20 each, and have been surprisingly very pleased with the quality.

Thanks, Gregory. It's not a hack exactly since I didn't alter the structure in any way, other than adding the little hole to access the wall outlet. Time Out Chicago did a paragraph about it in a story on storage solutions in 2009 - see #3:

Love this concept. I created a similar solution (though much faster and cheaper) with a Pax wardrobe from IKEA. My "office" is behind the wardrobe's sliding door in my hallway. With one of the wardrobe shelves positioned at counter height, I can just slide open the door and pull over a stool from the kitchen when I want to work. A small hole cut into the back of the wardrobe means I can also plug task lighting, printer, and shredder directly into the wall outlet behind the unit. The Pax system can be configured to many different dimensions and styles.

Made tonight...delicious. I was tempted to add cheese to the grits because I have a hard time saying no to cheese, but took Nealey's advice and tried it first without. It was perfect without it.

Made this cake after bookmarking it ages ago. Make it!! It's easy and delicious!! A few tips: without time to order online and after searching high and low in stores for dark cocoa powder, I used regular and it worked fine; I substituted cake flour for 1/2 c of all purpose flour and would use even more cake flour next time; the frosting turns solid if made in advance and stored in the fridge, but it's fine when melted again over low heat.

Another use for rubber gloves: they are great for gripping a tight jar lid. When I learned this I was able to get rid of the unitasker rubber jar opener thingy taking up space in my gadget drawer!

What a beautiful result! I also opened up my galley kitchen and could not be happier with the outcome. You can see before and after photos here:

I love the idea, but the recipe is way too salty and spicy when made as directed. Next time I'll cut the salt and cayenne significantly.

Around 1978, when I was in fourth grade, there was a (brief) initiative in the US to move to the metric system, and we made this recipe at school using metric measures. Thanks for the memory!

I have a Bosch dishwasher purchased in 2005. It runs sooo quietly, which is a beautiful thing in a small home, but when the cycle is finished it makes a loud, obnoxious beeping sound. The beeping will continue for 30 seconds or so and repeat at intervals until shut off. I don't have a manual since it was a floor model at the store without the original packaging. Anyone have any advice or experience with this?

I don't remember this at all, but my mom swears that when we were kids, she always made homemade mac and cheese...until one day we told her we wished we could have the GOOD kind like we got at our cousins' house (aka Kraft). That was it, from then on it was the blue box for us. LOL.

I've replicated it with Velveeta, though my taste buds have matured and now I only make it with real cheese.

I'm American and bought Brazil: A Cook's Tour after living in Sao Paulo for a year. I don't make a lot of the recipes, but I enjoy making the Creme de Palmito (cream of heart of palm soup) and the sweet avocado dessert. And the photos and travel journal about kitchens throughout several regions of Brazil are great!

I just made yogurt for the first time ever, following this technique with outstanding success. I appreciated the precise instructions; would not have had the confidence to attempt it otherwise. After chilling the yogurt I also drained it overnight for a super thick, Greek-style result. Fantastic!

I mix equal parts yogurt, milk, and rolled oats when I get up in the morning, and by the time I get to work and eat it an hour later, the oats are softened. I also mix in honey, vanilla or almond extract, fruit, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, nuts, or whatever I have on hand. Fast, easy, healthful, and delicious!

Nice job on a small budget! I especially like the open drawer front on the island for dropping in trash and recycling.
