Durability isn't an issue as you can coat it with a couple of coats of polyurethane.

I'm not sure this is the right placement for this technique. If you add sand or anything to help avoid slips, it diminishes the intent of this finish. Additionally, it seems there are a lot of crevices for dirt to stick to. Painting it makes it look sloppy, so that's not a solution if it gets dirty or stained.

I've done this finish several times in the past, only on a wall. I've used wallpaper paste for the base, and covered it with a good coat of polyurethane in the end to keep it durable. Keep in mind that this is a pretty permanent covering, so make sure it's something you like before doing it! But the finished product is always great.

7th Generation laundry soap is amazing. It's a buck or so more than the plebeian Tide and you find that if you use less it works just as effective. The unscented smells like clean clothes should, instead of a highly perfumed Mountain Fresh Springtime Morning. And if everyone swapped to a bottle of 7th generation, we save 298,000 barrels of oil, enough to heat and cool 17,100 U.S. homes for a year. That's insane!

I find the Mrs. Myers products to be overpriced and not be effective.

The Trader Joe's is a good product, I find it to be similar to the Method products.

Making your own: There are a lot of recipes online, and Heloise's seem to be the most effective and simple.

It's a trade-off using environmentally friendly products: You may have to scrub a little harder but it's worth saving the planet, or at least doing your share.

I always tell my clients that if you love a color, use it sparingly. It's the difference between "Oh, you love yellow! It even reminds me of (champagne label)" and "Oh, you've clearly gone insane and painted your entire room yellow. Let's take a trip to the nut-barn".

But seriously, find a complementary color to the yellow and then use the yellow in pillows, artwork, draperies, etc.

Now, if you don't want to paint, what I would recommend is finding a "bridge" between the yellow and the grays/browns. Add some prints with supplemental window treatments (double rods) that incorporate yellow. Tone down the shelves by placing larger art pieces underneath them, casually leaned against the wall. Get a big bowl of labels of the champagne you dig and throw 'em in a huge bowl on your coffee table - with a bunch of books about travel, wine, champagne, etc. That shows you are interested in these things and gives people a jumping off point to talk about these interests when they come to your home.
