After reading this, I've been trying to put it into practice. I think it's a great resolution.
For me it's more about when I've finished my coffee, instead of leaving the mug on the side table, I get up and put it on the kitchen counter. Or if I've opened the mail, I immediately put the envelopes and any junk mail in the recycling and file the things that need to be filed; instead of just leaving it all in a pile for another time. I'm horrible at picking up after myself and my kids may think I'm going crazy since I'm constantly telling myself to "Do it NOW!"
Between this and the January Cure, my house is looking way less cluttered.

If you're like me and don't have a shredder sometimes Crime Stoppers hooks up with Shred It and for a donation you can get all your stuff shredded. My city doesn't have a place to bring your papers to be shredded so I just keep my eye open for this event.
This is super helpful when you've just sorted through 7 years of papers. :-)

woohoo! I did this the weekend I was supposed to be focusing on the kitchen...

Day 14: Get Papers & Files in Order Apartment Therapy January Cure

We've been renovating our back room which includes floor to ceiling bookshelves and an office area. I didn't realize how long it would take to go through my book addiction and my husbands cd/computer book addiction, but it's looking great and it feels so clean and organized! I keep my favourite authors and do lots of lending. And now that all the video stores are closed, our DVD collection gets picked through a lot by our friends. Netflix Canada doesn't have as many titles available as the states does!

Day 12: Declutter Books & Media Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/17/13 10:59 AM

We started enforcing Media Free Sunday a few years ago in our house. My kids are teenagers and I get that computers are now their main form of communicating with their friends, but sometimes it's nice to talk and do stuff with them even if I have to crack the whip to get them off of their computers.
Music is allowed and if we all agree on a movie, we watch one together at night.
We're all computer addicts and I think it's important to remember that there are other things to do in life besides stare at a screen.

It has a great shape! I'm a lamp addict. If I'm in a thrift store, one of the first places I go is to check out the lamps. For a couple bucks, you get one, paint it the way you want and have something crazy and different in your house that makes you happy when you look at it.

I do think the lamp is missing something though. The way it was painted previously with the two tones needs to be done again to just add a little more interest to it. Because they are right, currently it does look like a grenade...it's not horrible, it just doesn't look quite done.

I currently have a mug addiction. I love pottery mugs and whenever I go out to thrift stores, keep a look out for handmade mugs. Or cute little vintage mugs.

Good Design, Everyday Objects: Mugs

I currently want to whip my computer across the room every time I see the word CURATE on all the design blogs I'm addicted to. I realize words can evolve, but this one sounds so pretentious...

Design wise, I've never loved granite or ikat or books that are wrapped in paper.

There's a show that came out last year called Consumed, the first season is online (http://www.hgtv.ca/consumed/video.aspx), and I find it much more helpful and inspiring than Hoarders. There's lots of good tips for organization and how to get rid of things.
Hoarders stresses me out whereas this show just reminds me of how my house looks some days...

How Not to Be a Hoarder

One friend had a toilet paper holder that was scented inside. I thought that was the coolest thing, so cool, that I dreamt about it that night and peed the bed!!

Another friend had a water bed in the middle of her yard. She said it was for when she set up her tent...we just jumped on it.

Closets were also big for me. I never had one in my room till I was a teenager and we moved into this house that had a huge closet and then a door that opened into another one tucked under the eaves. I practically lived in there, drawing and daydreaming...

I love so many elements in this place! It looks awesome! I totally covet those radiator covers and lots of the furniture. I'm just confused over the little grey rug in the living room, it feels out of place to me...

It was nice to see the before photos and all the cute little things they had around their home, but it was hard to get a sense of what exactly After looked like. Would have been nice to see more of the rooms rather than the doodads.

oh archdarling, I feel your pain. I have tons of books and movies that I lend out but most people are good at giving them back. We just have one friend that we don't allow to borrow ANYTHING from us. I guess it helps that I have a super geeky husband who set up a book/video database for them to sign things out on...
