It's garlic. A lot of the heirloom varieties have streaks of red/purple in the papery skins.

The mechanism that increases net cooling when you drink hot tea is the same one that is triggered by spicy foods.

Whether your place is officially a two-bedroom or a one-bedroom, it's only going to appeal to couples. In that case, having a walk through room isn't going to a problem (much like it wasn't an issue for you). Stage it as an office.

I have an 18-month-old, and at least with her, there's no knowing. She loved curried scambled eggs last week and HATES them this week. Anyway, I'm sure the parents will be touched that you're so thoughtful. If you end up guessing wrong thoough, don't feel bad. Toddlers are weird.

Even infants' bottles don't need to be sterilized (unless they're premature or otherwise immunocompromised). I have a hard believing perfectly healthy adults really need to be this paranoid.

That bottle opener is spot on beautiful. It is also out-performed by: (a) any 99 cent opener, (b) the edge of a counter, or (c) your teeth. I know, unfortunately, from experience. It does look great on the shelf though.

I have the watermelon knife - not because I needed, but because it made me smile. It actually is pretty awesome at cutting watermlon - better than my chef or slicing knife. It kind of cracks me up and makes me happy every time I pull it out, and that's good enough to earn a place in knife drawer.

One thing I have, that I didn't see here, is a soft fruit peeler. It looks like a normal carrot peeler, but the blade is serrated. It's awesome. Peels peaches, apricots, mangos, kiwis like a dream.

I may have to get the pineapple slicer and strawberry corer after all these positive comments.

This is a weird list. Yes, these are all "cool" plants, but most need full sun and a green thumb. Cactuses often die due to overwatering (which is easier to do than you think). The lemon tree will require daily misting. Somehow I don't seen that happening.

Kitchen-aid definitely a must have. In retrospect though, I really wish I had bought the tilt head, instead of the one pictured. The tilt head makes it so much easier to add ingredients, scrap the bowl, etc - and I don't *really* need the extra power or space you get with the higher model.

Ugh. A small sink is a deal breaker.

@XAND83, a 16-inch wide, 8-inch deep sink isn't "tiny". It's pretty darn roomy.

Buy the bare minimum of stuff prior to the baby being born. The stores will still be there after he or she arrives, and once you meet your little one, you'll have a better sense of his or her (and mom and dad's) unique needs. I had a wipes warmer on my registry, and I'm so glad no one bought it, because my daughter was just fine with cold wipes. Other babies scream bloody murder everytime their bum gets touched with a cold wipe - you'll figure that out ASAP and can respond then. Other parents' advice about "must haves" are the essentials for their baby, not necessarily for yours.

@ Judiau - Babies poop liquid for the first 6 months (while breastfeeding). There's no separating the poop into one place and the diaper into another.
