You could buy stock cabinets and build a drywall surround for them, so that the unfinished sides and backs won't show. You should obviously attach them to the floor, and build the drywall surround basically the same way you would a wall, only obviously not full height. The height would depend on if you want a bar or a counter height, and your countertop options are pretty endless. Here's a good photo to see what I mean.

Me, him, two tween girls. Whenever I feel like doing laundry (usually when my own basket is full), I tell the family members to get their laundry ready for me. This means all of their clothes are right side out, pockets are emptied, layers are peeled apart, etc. Then I take our 3 identical laundry baskets and sort everyone's clothes together into darks, whites, and colors (due to the tween girls, this is our biggest load). I do those 3 loads, fold them all as soon as they are out of the dryer, sort them into one pile for each person, and that's it. It seriously takes me 3-4 hours, mostly waiting for things to finish, and I do it every 10 days or so. I wish I could trust my kids to help or do their own, but they would honestly just wear their dirty clothes, and I'd just rather know they are wearing clean things to school. I do towels and sheets every other week, and rags as needed since we don't use paper towels. I don't iron anything, ever.

Why on earth would anyone do laundry every single day?!

When I graduated from college (and finally had time to cook), my mother made me a cookbook in scrapbook style. It was filled with recipes she made throughout my childhood and knew that I loved. She also added a section at the bottom of each recipe with her personal notes: advice on difficult parts, funny stories about a time she messed it up, her favorite memories of eating that dish, or who she got the recipe from originally. My favorites are the ones that say, "Sub veggie broth if you're still in your vegetarian phase" or "You can add cilantro to this if you've decided you like it now." My mother passed away 3 years ago (I was also 25), and I am so thankful for this cookbook. Your mom sounds a lot like mine.

I would recommend scanning or typing the recipes out and making a digital/printable copy you wouldn't mind messing up, then put them in a book with plastic sleeves. You could add your own notes about your memories of that recipe, or anything she may have written in the margins. While I'm waiting for water to boil or soup to simmer, I love reading the notes and remembering my mom.

i agree with most people that the right soup can be a very satisfying meal in itself, but wanted to add that my mother always served french onion soup (which makes no sense with a grilled cheese sandwich since it already contains bread and cheese) with apple slices. the hot/cold combo worked great, and sort of canceled out the heavy soup.

we use the method tablets and break them in half most of the time (when we don't have a full load). we've tried many other brands, and keep coming back to method. everything else leaves powdery stuff or streaks.

maybe a small cheese, like babybel or even string cheese. grapes or cherries are also good fruits to snack quietly on, since they're bite-sized and not crunchy. just be sure your cherries don't have pits, because it obviously would be disgusting to spit those out during class.

also, when i was in college, i had a packed work and class schedule. this isn't a sure-fire thing to depend on, but i would often be able to quickly fit in a peanut butter & jelly sandwich as soon as i got to class, in that strange five minute period when everyone is straggling in. it didn't interrupt or distract anyone, and it kept my tummy from growling for the next few hours.

i agree with peggasus - i'm torn in a lot of ways, and i don't know if i will be happy or sad tomorrow.

as someone who depends on CTA and knows that they can hardly handle rush hour commutes, i honestly do not understand how they think they could handle the olympics.

if the time comes, i plan to disappear for the summer and rent my conveniently-located home to tourists.

i agree with bleuquila. i love the method mop! you can use the dry sheets that trap hair and dust, and then put on the orange microfiber part (which rinses out really easily in the sink or is machine washable), and use it with the method floor cleaner (which smells GREAT). i also like the curved handle.

I never realized this was such a big problem for so many people. I've always had a fabric shower curtain liner, even when I was growing up, and I've had the same one for probably 8 years now. It doesn't get gross or look cheap. The only plastic on it is at the top where the ring holes are, for reinforcement. It has never leaked. The bottom is weighted so that it doesn't billow. It was $10 at Target. I can throw it in the washing machine and it looks brand new every time.

My decorative shower curtain is also fabric, from Crate & Barrell. No leaks, ever. No mildew.

Am I missing something here? Why isn't everyone using these?
