I agree with the statements above that advocate for refinishing rather than repainting wood. The piece is beautiful and i would LOVE to have a similar one in my home! As some pointed out they might have been veneer, but from the marks left from the previous drawer pulls it looks like wood...

Regardless...

that is not my problem with the redo. The paint choice matched with the wood and those knobs completely robs the piece of anything truly mid century modern. Even if you had painted the piece another color more in line with the era would have at least kept some of the original integrity. I really think that this paint job and knob choice makes the piece look cheap and almost prefabricated.

I agree! something must be done. Its looks like a wonderful space but the furniture is a couple of pieces of standard ikea wares! but not to worry, a nice splash of color and unique items will spruce the place right up. as other may have said, I don't know you. I don't know what colors you like and what themes to suggest. I would suggest that you look through your wardrobe and see what color clothing you have and if you have any colors what colors? And as Michael Scott says K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid) and just pick a single color and run with it!

but the best advice i have is: NO MORE IKEA. there are plenty of places to get decent items from, especially in a place like boston.

:D

i think a nice teal would look good in this space. and yes on the rug, i have a rug in my kitchen and i love it--- but it must be dark and washable. the kitchen is a messy place by nature, and you will want to wash your rug without having to pay super expensive prices to have it professionally cleaned.

This is a quite beautiful house, although i prefer the outside to the inside... but maybe it just needs some paint and TLC. And you guys who find the need to rant at one another are proof of just what this house is...
art. art is controversial, art evokes emotions.
It is sad that the owners want to use the lot for another purpose, but they own the land and are not obligated to keep any structure on it that they do not find appealing. It is quite sad that fate had to play out in such a way as to put such a beautiful piece of architecture in hands of those who don't appreciate it. That said, there are many beautiful homes that exist and many more will be made.

that chair is hideous.
replica art- tacky! you can find local artists work for less than 100 dollars or art students work.
but even the original room i find hard to look at-- the styling of the room could be much better, the knock off room is even worse.

I used to have a milkcrate with some christmas lights stuffed inside, gave a nice effect to the milk crate.
and i agree with everyone else, that cardboard box was in bad taste. it wasnt even an interesting one, like the ones that apples come in... with a design and decoupage that could look nice, but brown?

since this room has to serve many functions, mainly a living room, hallway of sorts and dining room, it is probably best if you try to section off the space by purpose. The fireplace should most certaintly be the focal point of the living room portion. Rather than doing the boring square formation of furniture (fireplace on on side, couch parallel and chairs flanking either side, i would suggest that you move the furniture in a V formation. As for the TV, i would say its natural place has to be above the fireplace. If you do not want it to compete with the fireplace, i have seen some TV's that mask as art, with some sort of cover and a frame maybe. The dining area can then be placed next to the living area. I would suggest maybe a small bench to go along the back wall opposite the fireplace or bookshelves for extra storage. As for the colors, i would say draw from your love of midcentry modern and select a color like chartruse or a muted version of that. The green and yellow tones would nicely complment the tone of the wood, as well as your existing furniture (minus the rug, which should go regardless because it competes with the style of the furniture as well as with the color of the floor). if you were to paint the walls that greenish or yellow color, you would be well suited in your future furniture and decorating finds because so many of the colors that are typical of that era are complements.

as everyone else has said so stupid. also, arranging books but color is a ridiculous notion. how about people structuring bookshelves according to function. I have hundreds and hundreds of books. I am always best served by taking a hint from an actual library, and sorting books by subject and content.
