Each to his own. If it had been my "before" I would have removed that ruffle thing above the windows, stood a few tall (3-4 feet or higher) plants in nice pots on the floor around the windows, found a cheerful rug to go under the table and chairs, which I would have kept as they were, and have greatly preferred the result to the "after" room shown here.

It's a little like viewing the photo on the top of this post. First you see the lovely sunny wall and mirror. Then, you scroll down to some nice enough objects on a surface. Finally, when you hit the defaced dresser on the bottom, and the "ewww" kicks in, you still have an overall favorable impression of the room, thanks to the first glances you had of it.

I can't imagine a more unappetizing wall color than grey (except black, of course), and nothing in a grey room looks good to me. Nothing! Can't wait for this trend to fade out of sight.

The author's points are good, but she does some not-so-optimal things with the English language in expressing them. Her written output contains lots of linguistic spaces that could use some rearrangement.

I also disagree with the suggestion. When I bought my house, I didn't have a lot of $$ left for furnishing it, so the wall colors and curtains WERE most the basis of my initial decor. As time went by, I added stuff that would go with what was there, and it all worked out very harmoniously.
