Other Patrick: I don't like Dwell, either. But I hate rooms that look like a roving theatrical set (with no relationship to the bones of the room, see AD).

I like very few shelter magazines, for some reason.

Their editorial direction gets advertisers, don't forget. There's a very good reason that AD has been around for ages.

I predict that whomever takes the reins at AD will continue to publish photo spreads of rooms that look as upholstered as the lining of a Las Vegas jewelry box, along with "profiles" of celebrity digs that mysteriously align with said celebrities' latest PR push.

Sorry, modernists.

Seconded on the Acme bag. The trixie in camo is the one I have. I love it.

I love it. I especially love that someone out there likes Renaissance Revival furniture! It's so over-the-top, and it completely works in this space.

I think people need to consider that not EVERY space needs to be minimalist or mid-century-modern or "clean" or ... one thing. It's not ApartmentDogma.com.

I saw this in the CB2 catalog and started laughing. It's a calculator, not wall decor.

I don't get hanging art on bookcases, though I see it in a lot of shelter magazines. Doesn't the art block access to the books?

Psst -- love the apartment, but I notice that the fireplace is missing its keystone. You can buy a replacement at Restoration Resources in Southie.

As a fellow South Ender, I zeroed in on this right away...

Beautiful, but is whitewash the only means of creating a harmonious mixed-era environment? I feel like this approach is becoming a cliché.

It's NEVER known as "Little Italy," by the way. It's only ever the North End. This is Boston, not New York.

Waves to Ann & Dabney! I was fortunate to visit their old basement apartment. It was charming as could be, so this successful reno is no surprise.

@designporn: I disagree, emphatically. It doesn't matter if the tag is "good quality." It's a tag.

Of course, people can choose to leave it on, but it was never meant to stay there. I'm sure it makes Coach terrifically happy that people do, of course. It's free advertising.

This observation goes for anything else with a tag. If you like logos and being a vehicle for advertising, go for it, I guess.

Worst: leaving the little metal/leather "Coach" dogtags on a Coach bag. Throw it awaaaaaaayyyyyyy.....

Wow, such envy and prudishness. Way to judge someone you've never met!

I like his space. It's not perfect, but it's a legitimate loft (unlike a lot of spaces with the "loft" label) and it's seen a lot of history.

I love this. It still says "tenement," but the more uncomfortable/crusty bits left over from tenement life have been eliminated.

A note on claw-foot tubs: they're impossible to clean around/under in a small space. And old cabinets can be pretty awful. The doors rarely close well, they're not level, etc. I like that one of the old cabinets was restored, but I understand why most of the old fixtures were taken out.

The designer in this case did an abysmal job communicating with his client. The client assumed that everything would be to his liking without any feedback or input; the designer should have understood that his job was to set expectations and insist on client feedback.

The story made me cringe, result aside.

Um ...

"Roger Scruton is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute."

... which is a conservative think tank. Which, I think, is why the author manages to combine a heavy anti-state-interference message with a love for tradition. Independence of thought is great, as long as it's of the era of our founding fathers!
