Why would you give that up! Even in the south bay suburbs (Sunnyvale), decent 1-bedrooms go for $1800-$2000. I'm paying $1900 for a junior 1-bedroom. When will the bubble pop?

As much as I know they're good for environment, I wish there was an alternative to the cornstarch packing peanuts. I'm severely allergic to corn and touching those things is enough to make my hands swell up with hives. Getting packages is always an adventure.

The Filtrete one doesn't look bad, but it requires power from HVAC to work on WiFi? How on earth do you do that? I'm a renter, and my programmable thermostat is battery powered.

How does the detection feature work if your thermostat is in the hallway and you spend all your time in the front room or something?

The new gmail design is fine... better optoins. I dislike what they did to reader though. So much white space around the menus up top that the reading pane is itty bitty on a 15" MBP at full resolution. What a waste of screen real estate.

Aww, you guys are party poopers... I think this is a creative concept. Not for everyone, sure, but I'm an engineer by day and a gardening as my alter ego, and when you don't have much space to garden because you rent a tiny apartment, this could be pretty clever.

Free-standing furniture... I did this with an etagerie over the toilet, a simple white one from Target. I used some vinyl decals on the corner of it to continue the pattern from the wall. It totally works. Replacing the hardware with some simple but not ugly rental chrome also went a long way.

@username26: it's not a perfect solution but Naturemill makes indoor electric (about the same amount as a nightlight uses, for turning) composters. Mine has needed some TLC a few times, but if you can afford it, it's a solution when you don't have room outdoors (like most of us apartment dwellers).

I use Glympse, but you set a time limit on how long the recipient can see your location. It's handy in the Bay Area where everyone is so spread out and a friend says he's coming by, I can tell how close he is with all the traffic. I also used it recently to help a friend move his motorcycles in case I lost him.

I like this idea. My apartment has crappy plywood cabinets that have like 10 coats of drippy white paint on them, and yet my landlord won't let me paint.

Ugh, I'm still trying to find a good alternate to my Naturemill. I'm so mad, i replaced the motor and latch system twice within the warranty, and the latch system broke again. I keep reading how many people have the same problem. I'm going to go low-tech on my apartment patio instead.

I am the most sanitary, paranoid person in the kitchen because I've been hospitalized for severe food poisoning of various forms on about 6 occasions in the past 5 years. All from food other people cooked :( Including a roommate, and I was the only one who fell ill. These are all excellent tips.
