I think a "no sweets" approach is analogous to abstinence only sex education: faith based and unlikely to succeed.

I can't help but think of Joan Didion: "It occurred to me that we had finally evolved a society in which knowledge of a pastry marble, like a taste for stairs and closed doors, could be construed as "elitist," and...I felt very like the heroine of Mary McCarthy's Birds of America, the one who located America's moral decline in the disapeparance of the first course."

This home is beautiful. And, patrick(the other one), I think you are very wise. =)

I always take "you can't paint" to mean "when you move out, it needs to look like you didn't paint." I say if you're going to be living somewhere for a year or more, it's worth making it someplace worth living. Painting and repainting is a small investment for a great return, in my opinion.

Thank you all for your feedback! The shades are homemade from miniblinds, as per instructions linked to from AT. My litmus test for the ceiling was that the color couldn't look black if even only the dimmest of my light sources were illuminated, so I chose a blue with a lot of richness and even warmth; I hope that it minimizes claustrophobia. The Arc lamp I did put over my bed at first, but I didn't like the feeling of having anything hovering over the bed like that, and the idea of a light source along that wall was appealing. I really bought it to go over my dining table in an Apartment of the Future. And as for the dresser...I was going for a faux bois effect. Admittedly, it's not the way I was imagining the result would be...but I like to think that the effect is at least less bacon-y in person.

Really, is $18 for a reasonably good quality t-shirt so exorbitant? And the reason I shop at AA for shirts is because it's one of few retailers that carries clothing that fits slender men. As for the advertising...doesn't every fashion house feature young women wearing their clothing, and as little else as possible?
