I finally made the "perfect" chocolate chip cookie this week. They're okay; they have that mall-cookie taste, instead of the homemade-cookie taste. They're just as easy as any chocolate chip cookie I've ever made, but I'll probably stick with my memorized recipe.

I think this is a charming facade--or will be when it's given a little affection.

I concur with the above suggestions to remove (or tone down) the burglar bars, paint the stucco (but never the brick!), clean the stonework, and paint both doors something eyecatching (I like the red, personally), and see if you can get the electrical re-run.

One of my favorite summer meals is avocado, baked with blue cheese and walnuts. It's simple and delicious.

It does look like some sort of intestinal parasite.

Does anyone know if the conversion for self-rising flour (substituting 1 cup of all purpose flour minus 2 tsp., and add 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder and 1/2 tsp. salt to make the full cup) works with cake flour?

Only a badly made julep is vile. It's like powdered lemonade mix instead of fresh-squeezed.

If it was too much junk, I just do a fruits, nuts, and maybe cheese week. Pear and gorgonzola flat breads or salads. Roasted figs in honey with pine nuts. Maybe mix in a meal of sweet potatoes roasted with rosemary.

If it was too rich food, too much meat, too much whiskey, I'll do a bananas-rice-applesauce-toast week.

Tiamat_the_Red: I have not made mascarpone ice cream, but I have eaten it and it's delicious, not cheesey at all. Creamy with a subtle tang. Not Eating Out in New York has an entry on making it yourself.

This Sicilian pistachio spread recipe is impossibly easy and amazing. Mostly, i just eat it on bread, but I've added it to tuna sandwiches or cheese sandwiches. Also, this smashed chickpea sandwich would be a nice change of pace. You can also make cucumber sandwiches, substituting radishes for the cucumbers, they're a bit spicy and nicely crunchy.

Just Bento has a curried peanut and a sesame carrot furikake which I just love and are vegetarian.

Without food, for sitting and chatting in the spring tend to reach for either prosecco or a big bold red.

Bacon cheese burger. The Guy is vegetarian, though, so I only eat meat/fish that's delivery-food or at a restaurant. All the cooking at home is no-meat. So I rarely have beef more than once a month. Each one is like that first off-the-wagon bacon cheeseburger. So.Yummy.

I took the red eye home and went directly to the office. I have coffee and a croissant from the bakery on the corner.

Yes, we have a "kitchen laptop" but I find i can't effectively cook from a recipe on the screen. We mostly use the kitchen laptop for ordering delivery or take out!

This looks great. I know what treacle and golden syrup are, but what is mixed peel? Is it citrus zest or something else?

I eat beef most often--BUT I only eat it once a month (sometimes twice).

If you are turning a recipe vegetarian, does Marmite work to substitute for bacon drippings, or beef stock, or any other meat-things which add depth to dishes?

For those readers in Chicago: South Water Kitchen has an Old Fashioned sampler on the menu right now:
Southern Comfort with tangerine; Jack Daniels with blood oranges; and Jim Beam with clementines.

Pretty good stuff. They make theirs with infused whiskeys: the oranges are macerated in the bottles.
