I am sure I was trained for handling getting lost in a crowd, but I remember better the getting lost in the woods training: Hug a tree. I was told it would make me feel better and easier to find. I thankfully never needed to use it.
Oh, and how air-headed of the host parents!

My husband just eats them like an apple right off the vine. I like slicing them into wedges and having them with a sandwich (turkey) or sausage and feta and fresh crusty bread. Take a bite of tomato, take a bite of sandwich/sausage...mmmm. Will likely be dinner tonight. Oh, and I am a spoiled brat, I only eat fresh in-season tomatoes. Preferably after meeting the plant. :)

I am undecided about the lawn here. It can be well utilized for outside play and socializing and eating, but I agree that people get a little crazy about it. It can cost a lot of money and use a lot of resources. Folks should consider how they want to use their property and plan accordingly.

I find a shower, no matter how cold the water, still increases the humidity of my place. So I opt for cool baths. It cools me right to the core and I think sometimes that I heat the water on really hot days...

I regret to say that my husband and I just eat in front of the tv now, but we always eat together! We both grew up eating dinner with our families at the kitchen or dining-room tables, so I'm not sure what happened...When the kids come our way, though, I will certainly make an effort for us to sit down together to eat dinner (at least). So many important things are learned at the dinner table! E.g.: "please" and "thank you", the art of conversation, appropriate/healthy eating pace, portion control, sharing of food and thoughts & feelings, blessing/prayer in some families...gosh this really is a great research topic!

when I was younger I babysat (and did some laundry) for a family who had version like number 2. It was really lovely and made logistical sense in their house. I could wheel it out into the living room and fold while the child played.

One "quick and dirty" version could just be an indoor s'more. Roast the marshmallow over the stove top and pair with the graham cracker and chocolate softened in the microwave... wish I had some chocolate in the house...

Wow, a lot of people have stories. So I'm adding mine.
When I was a kid I awoke one night in the summer to find something flying in my room (I had a nightlight to see this clearly). Terrified, I attempted to squeak out a few "mom!"s, but the flying creature I assumed was a bird started to dive bomb me! I hid under my covers for a few minutes and when I emerged whatever it was escaped through the teeny space my door had been left open at. I jumped out of bed and ran to my parents door and whispered to my mom that there was a bird in the house. She knew better. It was a bat. We spent an hour turning on lights and opening doors and windows to get it to leave, but it continued to fly around. We decided to go back to bed but leave the lights and doors as they were and shut our bedrooms tight. In the morning there was no sign of the creature and we assumed it left. That evening, however, it emerged from its hiding spot behind our dining room armoire and began to dive bomb us in the living room. Panicked, we called the local police of our sleepy town; they had nothing better to do, apparently and sent an officer. The officer was aware that a spray with wasp killer would sedate the bat, so him and my father cautiously went to work sedating and then capturing it in a plastic bag. They then preceded to smash the poor creature in the bag with their flashlights (giant mag-lights) until it was no more. Thankfully we never had another bat in the house, but I think my mom would have found another way to deal with it.

The husband and I hope to travel over and up into Michigan (from Chicago of course) to go cherry picking, or other foraging for fruit. It really is such a beautiful place, especially to get out of the city.

My dad has a feeding trough that was basically a bathtub-sized version of number 1, and he uses it for a "outdoor soaking-tub" infrequently. It was quite affordable when we bought it for him about 10 years ago for father's day (on request of course, we thought it was crazy). It has a drain in the bottom for emptying and refilling with fresh water. The best use for it though is bathing the dogs outside in the summer. The sides are too big for them to jump out!

I grew up in the area, and yes the Amish and Mennonite folks are amazing cooks, farmers, crafts-people...I took it for granted when I was younger and miss having such a great resource and culture nearby.
and phoxx, I don't think the Lehman people are Amish themselves...

I have no shame in admitting that I could stand to read some of these myself, and I'm in my late twenties. I had not learned a lot of skills before college and it has been a mad dash through undergrad and grad school to a point where I realize I would like to be able to eat good food I have cooked myself. So, thank you for this compilation!
