Don't even copnsider painting that wood work. I could see possibly changing out the tile to something more to your liking, but that wood is beautiful and would be permanantly ruined if painted...

I'd suggest getting some art work up on the walls. Get rid of the shutters and put some sheers up. A nice area rug with some color should liven things up as well...

I'm the original poster for this thread. Thanks so much for the feedback. I think the easiest fix will be to repaint the walls to the left of the fireplace. That idea has been dancing around in my head. I will also play with rearranging the mirror and candle sticks. I do have a second chair, but I can not place it on the other side of the fireplace due to the deck door. The mantle is actually a piece of gray slate attached to the wall by mortor and brick supports underneath. That change would definitely require a good contractor!

It really does look like more cabinetry was added to the upper cabinets to compensate for what was lost on the lower cabinets. The new cabinets are also taller than the old cabinets.
