Seriously keep it old school and wash your own dishes. No power use, able to control the amount of water you use, can grey water for your garden if you use the right dish soap. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Pros and Cons of the Fisher & Paykel Dish Drawers Product Reviews |

I live in Australia and clothes on the line is a way of life (the hills hoist is an icon like vegemite)! And if Apartment blocks ban hanging clothes on balconies then they have to provide an alternative option for your clothes to hang in the sun. Well it was like that the last time I lived in Apartments, hope it's still the same. Often you'll see a fenced off area where there are stacks of washing lines around apartment blocks in Brisbane. brand new/glossy. I can't stand it when furniture looks like it has never been used, carpet never been walked on, windows never opened and no one actually living there. I love to see how people are living in their space whether it's minimal or cluttered. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Your Biggest Design Pet Peeves Austin |

Eh.. snakes. The things are often way too scared of you to be of any concern. In Australia you got to check the toilet, but it's spiders you're looking for. An introduction of species is usually mans fault, not climate. Our city is example of that, we've been through a heap of introduced species to erradicate the previous and we're currently over-run with Water Dragon lizards, they're everywhere. air conditioning is tarriffed beyond an average persons income here in Brisbane Australia, so I live through temps 90 to 110 without air conditioning every summer. Best tips are - visit places with great air conditioning (state library has great air-con and free wireless internet); see a movie during the hottest part of the day; live in a house that is off the ground for airflow; sleep during the day; go to the local pool and drink a lot. It's amazing how beer takes the edge off the heat. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | When the Air Conditioner Breaks: Inflatable Pool? |

All those people who say that public transport wouldn't work LA is too spread out, apparently as far as city (incl suburbs) size goes my city of Brisbane is on a par with the size of LA. We have public transport. It works. Sure we complain about it daily because it's no awesome Tube, but its available and not just for poor people (an attitude I picked up from my husbands family while in the USA). I grew up in Brisbane Australia where not one single old something hasn't become a new something in the last 20 years (ie powerhouse museum, woolstore appartments). Lived in Northern MI with husbands family for a year and was shocked about how a city as well known by name as Detroit could be left to rot like that. You can tell it's a real 'pretend decaying city over there doesn't exist while I build my super-mall suburb over here' kind of place. Very sad. Such beautiful architecture! Detroit shouldn't let the decay happen. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | 100 Abandoned Houses |
