We visited Coronado on our honeymoon! Such a lovely place. Evidently it's part of the building code on the island that no two homes are allowed to look exactly alike (or so our tour guide said), which I think is awesome. Our tour guide also told us that the MEDIAN home price was $1M (in 2006). Not quite so awesome.

This is a beautiful and incredibly well designed space. Well done!

The new layout is a huge improvement, but the original kitchen had so much character!

Pre-made hummus and pre-chopped onions for sure. Oh, and carrot chips. I have TMJ, so I'm not supposed to eat whole or even baby carrots-- they're too thick and strain my jaw too much. But carrot chips are the perfect thickness, and great for scooping out the aforementioned pre-made hummus.

Our house is lovely Victorian on the outside, bland new construction on the inside. I'm constantly looking for ideas to bring some of the exterior character to the indoor spaces. In the living room, the biggest stumbling blocks are:

1. The early 00's tv niche. It's actually three niches-- a big, square one in the middle of the wall with smaller ones above and below. Nothing could be less Victorian than giant drywall-clad holes in the wall.

2. The drywall column on the kitchen pass-through. It's textured drywall, so I can't just paint it glossy white and pretend it's wood. We're thinking to clad it in some sort of veneer, but that plan is complicated by the fact that the column is bisected by the bar counter.

3. The rounded drywall corners. I don't understand why this is supposed to be such a desirable feature. It renders the above items even more contemporary-looking, and forget about trying to end a paint color at a corner. Infuriating.

Unless one is a very still sleeper, it seems like every toss or turn would set your bed a-rockin'. Makes me a bit nauseous to think of it. Cool in concept, but maybe not for real life, every day use.

House of Pies in Houston serves their hot chocolate in little individual kettles. You pour it into your own mug, which comes ALREADY FILLED with whipped cream. It's not Paris by any means, but at 3 in the morning, it's pretty damn fantastic.

OH MY GOSH, we have EXACTLY the same chair, only ours is teal!!

It was made by Kroehler, a furniture company based out of the Chicago area. Here's a cut-and-paste from the encyclopedia of Chicago history:

"In 1902, Peter E. Kroehler bought the Naper ville Lounge Co., a maker of wooden lounge chairs and upholstered furniture. Kroehler built a new factory in Naperville in 1913 after the original facility was destroyed by a tornado. Soon thereafter, he renamed the company Kroehler Manufacturing Co. This enterprise soon operated across the country and employed several hundred men and women in the Chicago area. By the middle of the 1940s, with over $20 million in annual sales, Kroehler was the second-largest furniture maker in the United States. During the 1960s, when the company employed close to 8,000 people around the country, annual revenues passed $100 million. The company struggled during the 1970s, closing its historic Naperville factory in 1978 and ending its operations in the area. In 1981 Kroehler was acquired by the ATR Group of Northbrook, which put the com- pany up for sale. By the early 2000s, furniture was still manufactured under the Kroehler name by two unrelated companies, one in North Carolina and the other in Ontario, Canada."

I have no idea if Kroehler furniture is particularly valuable...

Our chair came from my grandmother, who apparently purchased it from a catalog with stamps she got from buying groceries (I think she calls them "green stamps"?).
