I used matelasse coverlets that I got at TJMaxx for the panels. As they are already edged, the only sewing required is the top seam to fit the curtain rod. I pre-washed them before sewing. When I need to wash them, they go right into the washing machine and hang to dry. They look great and I get many compliments.

A great wash recipe is 1/2 cup of vinegar combined with 1/2 cup of baking soda added to 1/2 the amount of 'green' laundry detergent suggested by the manufacturer. This creates a reaction that causes oxygen which enhances the cleaning action of the detergent.

Lastly, I put in 1/2 cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle to get out the last bit of laundry detergent from the clothing.

You may have to do this twice. Also, let the item dry in the sun.
